Description
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the first bit-scrambling algorithm is a different one of a plurality of possible first bit-scrambling algorithms for each of a plurality of successive power-up cycles of the digital receiver, and the second bit-scrambling algorithm is a different one of a plurality of different possible second bit-scrambling algorithms for each separate power-up cycle of the digital receiver.
Further, the serial order of the successive bits of the bitstream presented to each of the parallel data lines of the data busses 16 and 18 can likewise be scrambled. Also, rather than implementing the cipher
Claims (18)
- A method for providing an interface (16,18) between a decryption engine (12) and a system decoder (14) of a digital receiver (10) in which the system decoder (14) receives an encrypted bitstream which is supplied (16) to the decryption engine (12), and in which the decryption engine (12) decrypts the encrypted bitstream;
the method comprising the steps of:scrambling (20) in said system decoder (14) the encrypted bitstream, to thereby produce a scrambled encrypted bitstream;descrambling (24) in said decryption engine (12) the scrambled encrypted bitstream, to thereby produce a descrambled encrypted bitstream which is the same as the original encrypted bitstream;employing (12) the decryption engine (12) to decrypt the descrambled encrypted bitstream, to thereby produce a decrypted bitstream;scrambling (26) in said decryption engine (12) the decrypted bitstream to thereby produce a scrambled decrypted bitstream; anddescrambling (22) in said system decoder (14) the scrambled decrypted bitstream, to thereby produce a descrambled decrypted bitstream which is the same as the original decrypted bitstream. - The method as set forth in Claim 1,
wherein:the scrambled encrypted bitstream is supplied from the system decoder (14) to the decryption engine (12) via a first parallel data bus (16) which includes a plurality N of parallel bit lines corresponding to respective N bits of the scrambled encrypted bitstream;the scrambled decrypted bit-stream is supplied from the decryption engine (12) to the system decoder (14) via a second parallel data bus (18) which includes a plurality N of parallel bit lines corresponding to respective N bits of the scrambled decrypted bit-stream;the step of scrambling (20) the encrypted bitstream comprises scrambling the bit order of the N bits of the encrypted bitstream on the respective N bit lines of the first data bus; andthe step of scrambling (26) the decrypted bitstream comprises scrambling the bit order of the N bits of the decrypted bitstream on the respective bit lines of the second data bus. - The method as set forth in Claim 1, wherein:the scrambled encrypted bitstream is supplied from the system decoder (14) to the decryption engine (12) via a first parallel data bus (16) which includes a plurality N of parallel bit lines corresponding to respective N bits of the scrambled encrypted bitstream;the scrambled decrypted bit-stream is supplied from the decryption engine (12) to the system decoder (14) via a second parallel data bus (18) which includes a plurality N of parallel bit lines corresponding to respective N bits of the scrambled decrypted bit-stream;the step of scrambling (20) the encrypted bitstream comprises delaying each of the respective N bits of the encrypted bitstream by a variable time period; andthe step of scrambling (26) the decrypted bitstream comprises delaying each of the respective N bits of the decrypted bitstream by a variable time period.
- The method as set forth in Claim 1, wherein:the step of scrambling the encrypted bitstream is performed in accordance with a first bit-scrambling algorithm; andthe step of scrambling the decrypted bitstream is performed in accordance with a second bit-scrambling algorithm.
- The method as set forth in Claim 4, wherein the first and second bit-scrambling algorithms are the same.
- The method as set forth in Claim 4, wherein the first and second bit-scrambling algorithms are different.
- The method as set forth in Claim 4, wherein the first bit-scrambling algorithm is a different one of a plurality of possible first bit-scrambling algorithms for each of a plurality of successive power-up cycles of the digital receiver.
- The method as set forth in Claim 4, wherein the second bit-scrambling algorithm is a different one of a plurality of possible second bit-scrambling algorithms for each of a plurality of successive power-up cycles of the digital receiver.
- A digital receiver (10) comprising:a system decoder (14) for receiving an encrypted bitstream, anda decryption engine (12) for decrypting the encrypted bitstream and producing a decrypted bitstream,the digital receiver comprising:a first scramble module (20) incorporated within said system decoder (14) for scrambling the encrypted bitstream to thereby produce a scrambled encrypted bitstream;a first descramble module (24) incorporated within said decryption engine (12) for descrambling the scrambled encrypted bitstream, to thereby produce a descrambled encrypted bitstream which is the same as the original encrypted bitstream;a second scramble module (26) incorporated within said decryption engine (12) for scrambling the decrypted bitstream to thereby produce a scrambled decrypted bitstream; anda second descramble module (22) incorporated within said system decoder (14) for descrambling the scrambled decrypted bitstream to thereby produce a descrambled decrypted bitstream which is the same as the original decrypted bitstream.
- The digital receiver (10) as set forth in Claim 9, wherein the digital receiver comprises a digital television receiver.
- The digital receiver (10) as set forth in Claim 9, wherein said system decoder (14) and said decryption engine (12) are embodied in separate first and second chips.
- The digital receiver as set forth in Claim 11, further comprising first and second ball grid array packages for packaging said first and second chips.
- A system decoder (14) for receiving an encrypted bitstream, the system decoder (14) being characterized by comprising:a scramble module (20) for scrambling the encrypted bitstream to thereby produce a scrambled encrypted bitstream for supplying to a decryption engine (12); anda descramble module (22) for descrambling a scrambled decrypted bitstream produced by the decryption engine (12) to thereby produce a descrambled decrypted bitstream.
- A decryption engine (12) for decrypting an encrypted bitstream and producing a decrypted bitstream, the decryption engine (12) being characterized by comprising;a descramble module (24) for descrambling a scrambled encrypted bitstream received from a system decoder to thereby produce the encrypted bitstream; anda scramble module (26) for scrambling the decrypted bitstream to thereby produce a scrambled decrypted bitstream for supplying to the system decoder.
- A method for providing an interface (16,18) between a decryption engine (12) and a system decoder (14) of a digital receiver (10) in which the decryption engine (12) decrypts an encrypted bitstream to produce a decrypted bitstream,
the method being characterized by comprising the steps of:scrambling (26) in said decryption engine (12) the decrypted bitstream to thereby produce a scrambled decrypted bitstream; anddescrambling (22) in said system decoder (14) the scrambled decrypted bitstream, to thereby produce a descrambled decrypted bitstream which is the same as the original decrypted bitstream. - A digital receiver (10) comprising:a decryption engine (12) for decrypting an encrypted bitstream and producing a decrypted bitstream, anda system decoder (14)the digital receiver being characterized by comprising:a scramble module (26) incorporated within said decryption engine (12) for scrambling the decrypted bitstream to thereby produce a scrambled decrypted bitstream; anda descramble module (22) incorporated within said system decoder (14) for descrambling the scrambled decrypted bitstream to thereby produce a descrambled decrypted bitstream which is the same as the original decrypted bitstream.
- A system decoder (14) characterized by comprising:a descramble module (22) for descrambling a scrambled decrypted bitstream produced by a decryption engine (12) to thereby produce a descrambled decrypted bitstream.
- A decryption engine (12) for decrypting an encrypted bitstream and producing a decrypted bitstream, the decryption engine (12) being characterized by comprising:a scramble module (26) for scrambling the decrypted bitstream to thereby produce a scrambled decrypted bitstream.
