Claims (14)
- An assembly comprising a nursing bottle (10), having a shoulder (16) which is angled relative to a side wall of the nursing bottle 10,
a teat (12), having a flange (18) with a sealing surface (20), and a retaining cap (14) for releasably retaining the teat (12) to the nursing bottle (10);
characterised in that the retaining cap (14) moves in a direction to act on the flange (18) to press a sealing surface or edge of an annular skirt, (19) depending from the lower surface of the flange (18) into sealing engagement with the angled shoulder (16) of the nursing bottle (10) in a direction substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the retaining cap (14), to form a flap valve. - The assembly according to claim 1 wherein the flange (18) of the teat (12) has a resilient skirt (19) dependent therefrom which provides the sealing surface of the flap valve.
- The assembly according to claim 2, wherein stiffness of the skirt (19) on the teat (12) is selected to determine the minimum vacuum pressure at which the flap valve opens.
- The assembly according to claim 1, wherein the retaining cap (14) is releasably fastened to the bottle (10) by means of a bayonet coupling between the retaining cap (14) and the bottle (10) in which one or more fastening pins (25) on the cap (14) or bottle (10) slide in a groove (17) on the opposed surface of the bottle (10) or cap (14), said groove (17) having an upper wall inclined towards the bottom of the bottle (10) so as to increase the force on the sealing surface of the flap valve as the cap (14) is tightened.
- The assembly according to claim 4, wherein said force on to the sealing surface of the flap valve is adjustable so as to vary the minimum vacuum pressure at which the flap valve opens.
- The assembly according to claim 1, wherein the shoulder 16 of the nursing bottle (10) has an externally facing surface, and the sealing surface of the flange (18) presses against the externally facing surface.
- The assembly according to claim 1, wherein an annular slip ring (13) is located between a lower face of the cap (14) and an upper face of the flange (18) on the teat (12).
- The assembly according to claim 7, wherein the slip ring (13) is made from, or coated with, a low friction material.
- The assembly according to claim 8, wherein the low friction material is a low friction plastic.
- The assembly according to claim 9, wherein the low friction plastic is teflon.
- The assembly according to claim 1 which includes a teat cover (15) which has a projection (29) in the lower surface of its upper end, which, when fitted, presses against the top of the teat (12) to seal the teat (12).
- The assembly according to claim 11, wherein the teat cover (15) is snap fitted to the bottle (10) or the retaining cap (14).
- The assembly according to claim 12, wherein the teat cover (15) is fastened by a snap fit action and removed by a turn and pull action.
- The assembly according to claim 1, wherein the shoulder 16 of the nursing bottle (10) has an internally facing surface, and the sealing surface of the flange (18) presses against the internally facing surface.
