- An operating program for generating setting routines is then called up from the memory 36 via the control circuit 35, as a result of which corresponding control commands are then given to the electromagnet 28 and to the drive motor 10.
- the electromagnet 28 is energized and brings the locking lever 25 into contact with the end face of the hub 2 via its armature 29.
- the drive wheel 10 then rotates the type wheel 1 counterclockwise, as a result of which the locking lug 31 of the locking lever 25 is inserted into the locking recess 32 in the Hub 2 of type wheel 1 engages.
- the type wheel 1 is blocked while the type wheel holder 11 is still rotated until the pin 16 engages in the slot 17 of the blocked type wheel 1.
- the drive motor 10 is also blocked by this latching, as a result of which control signals from the control circuit 35 are then triggered to switch off the drive motor 10.
- the electromagnet 28 is de-energized so that the locking lever 25 is brought out of engagement with the locking recess 32 and in contact with the stop 30 by means of the return spring 27.
- the type wheel 1 is then brought into the zero position according to FIG.
- the control circuit 35 determines the characteristic data stored as digital signals in the digital memory 36 for the type wheel 1 used, as a result of which the type wheel 1 is uniquely identified.
- the printing unit functions triggered by the keys 37 of the keyboard 38 such as the movement of the carriage 42 in the line direction, control of the transport width of the ink ribbon, control of the pressing force of the types during the generation of pressure, etc. are controlled accordingly by the control circuit 35, taking into account the characteristic data stored in the digital memory 36. The person operating the machine therefore does not need to make any additional settings when changing the type wheel 1, since the printing unit functions are automatically adapted to the character set of the type wheel used.
- FIG. 3 An expansion of the information content according to FIG. 2, in which the type wheel 1 has only one latching recess 32, is achieved according to FIG. 3 in that the hub 2 of the type wheel 1 has a recess 37 with a change in the angle between the side flanks 38 and 39.
- the type carrier carriage 42 is moved into the absolute left edge position.
- the actuation of the electromagnet 28 and thus the pivoting of the locking lever 25 from the rest position into the locking position takes place in the manner described above.
- the type wheel 1 and thus the drive motor 10 are blocked by hitting the side flank 38 against the locking lug 31 of the locking lever 25 and after the spring-loaded pin 16 has snapped into the slot 17 of the type wheel 1.
- the type wheel is then driven into the zero position, the Steps from blocking to zeroing the type wheel 1 are counted again in the counter 48. Then the type wheel 1 is rotated in the other direction of rotation until the locking lug 31 strikes the other side flank 39 of the recess 37. The type wheel is then turned from this blocking position to the zero position again, the angle between the zero position and the blocking position being determined again by counting the steps. As a result, the size of the angle and the position for resetting the type wheel 1 is detected via the control circuit 35 when the locking lever 25 is activated by turning the type wheel motor 10 to the left and right, thereby determining the complete identification code. The position of the coding recess on the type wheel 1 is to be arranged so that the zero position of the type wheel 1 is within the possible range of rotation between the end positions.
- FIG. 5 shows a flow chart for the functional sequence of the identification of the type wheel driven by a DC motor.
- the control device 35 queries whether the angle ⁇ is> 360 °. If the answer is affirmative, the control device determines that the type wheel 1 is missing. If, on the other hand, the angle ⁇ is ⁇ 360 °, a query is still made as to whether the motor 10 is blocked. If the answer is in the negative, the motor 10 continues to be actuated in the counterclockwise rotation.
- the angle ⁇ noted in the counter then serves as a single identifier code ⁇ 1. Each type wheel 1 with a different font set also has a different angle ⁇ 1.
- the angle ⁇ is a first identification code ⁇ 1.
- the counter now contains a second identity code ⁇ 2, after which the motor 10 is switched off and the locking lever 25 is pivoted out of the locked position.
- the control device 35 holds the characteristic data for the type wheel 1 used from the digital memory 36, which are required for controlling the impression strength, the step size of the ink ribbon, etc.
- the stepper motor drive can only indirectly detect a blocking of the drive by an offset of the zero position.
- the position of the coding recess or a coding stop must therefore be arranged so that the zero position of the type wheel 1 is within the possible range of rotation between the end positions.
- the identification code query with stepper motor drive is shown in FIG. 6, the locking lever 25 first being pivoted into the locked position. Thereafter, the stepper motor 10 is acted upon by 200 steps in counterclockwise rotation, a stepper motor with 100 steps per revolution being assumed. Then the step counter serving as a flag is set to 0, which is followed by a further left turn of the step motor 10 by 1 step. If a zero position is determined after this, this means that type wheel 1 is missing. If the zero position of the type wheel 1 is negated, the rotation of the stepping motor 10 is operated in the counterclockwise rotation until the pedometer indicates> 100.
- step counter is reset to zero and the stepper motor 10 is now operated stepwise in clockwise rotation, the zero position of the type wheel 1 being queried again via the control device 35. If no zero position is determined, further steps of the stepping motor 10 take place in clockwise rotation until the step counter indicates> 100. On it the locking lever 25 pivoted with the locking pin and the pedometer reset to zero. Then the stepper motor 10 is rotated clockwise again until the zero position of the type wheel 1 is reached.
- the control device 35 takes the simple identification code P1 from the pedometer.
- the stepping motor 10 is stopped in order to determine the identification code P1 in the pedometer. Then the stepper motor 10 carries out further steps in clockwise rotation until the step counter shows> 100. The pedometer is then reset to zero, after which the stepper motor 10 rotates to the left. This rotation ends when the type wheel 1 reaches the zero position again. As a result, a further identity code P2 can be found in the pedometer.
- the identification codes P1 and P2 enable the control device 35 to read out the characteristic data for the type wheel 1 used from the digital memory 36.

In current printers, such as serial printers, which are widely used, a variety of type wheels with different types corresponding to different languages and type areas are increasingly used, and there are a considerable number of different type wheels for different printing purposes. Although these type wheels contain different types, they usually have the same overall structure, so that they can be easily replaced in different printers. These type wheels can also be rotatably arranged in cassettes, which can be used interchangeably for a printing process in a serial printer.
Although the type wheels and also the type wheel cassettes have the same structure, the printing conditions differ according to the type or the nature of a type wheel, as stated above, so that when the type wheels are to be replaced, the operating conditions on the side of the printer itself correspond to an exchange must be changed by type wheels.
No. 4,018,639 discloses a printing element designed as a type wheel, but which has no code or display that could be read by the machine in order to automatically influence the printing device in such a way that it applies to certain printing elements with a specific function responds. Instead, the pressure elements require that the Operator identifies the information on the printing element so that the operator can adjust the printing device for the respective printing element accordingly.
Furthermore, US Pat. No. 3,398,439 describes a coded disk which is used in connection with type elements in order to automatically set the printing device so that it works in a certain way. However, no code is carried by the type element.
However, it is known from DE-OS 28 34 662 a type wheel with a coding area for identifying the printing element, the coded area being scanned by a sensor which is connected to a control circuit for controlling the printing system in accordance with the coding area read by the sensor . The coded area comprises a number of open and closed positions, which thus represent a binary code. The first and second positions are always open in order to indicate a clear starting or resting position. The third digit is coded to indicate whether it is a regular or a special printing element. The fourth, fifth and sixth digits following the third digit are encoded to represent information to control the distance between types. The seventh digit is coded for the number of types and the eighth and ninth digits for the impact force of the hammer. A disadvantage of this solution is the relatively high outlay which is caused by the application of the extensive coding area on the type wheels and by an additional sensor device.
The invention has for its object to provide a method for the automatic identification of type wheels in printing units of typewriters or office machines of a similar type, in which the type wheels have no coding areas to be applied separately have, which make the production of the type wheels more expensive. This object is achieved by the features specified in
The automatic detection of inserted type wheels in the corresponding receptacles of the typewriters or similar office machines is very inexpensive and does not require any additional effort in the machine, since additional scanning devices are not required for this. The production of the type wheels also does not become more complicated and expensive.

In Figure 1, a printing unit of a typewriter or office machine of a similar type is shown with a
The
In order to ensure that the spring-loaded
If the
The query of the identity codes is described below once for stepper motor and DC motor drive of
In contrast to a direct current drive with encoder, the stepper motor drive can only indirectly detect a blocking of the drive by an offset of the zero position. The position of the coding recess on the
When one of the
Via the data and
When the machine is switched on via a
An expansion of the information content according to FIG. 2, in which the
The query of the identity code is described below once for stepper motor and DC drive of the type wheel, in both cases a sensor for detecting the zero position is required.
Jedes Typenrad 1 mit einem anderen Schrifttypensatz hat auch einen anderen Winkel α 1.FIG. 5 shows a flow chart for the functional sequence of the identification of the type wheel driven by a DC motor. During the query, the blocking
If the
On the basis of the two
In contrast to the direct current drive with encoder, the stepper motor drive can only indirectly detect a blocking of the drive by an offset of the zero position. The position of the coding recess or a coding stop must therefore be arranged so that the zero position of the
Die Steuervorrichtung 35 entnimmt dem Schrittzähler den Einfachidentcode P1.The identification code query with stepper motor drive is shown in FIG. 6, the locking
If the zero position of the
The identification codes P1 and P2 enable the
