Description

The present invention relates to an electrical connector with improved mass continuity comprising a male connector made of a metallic cylindrical body in which are housed a plurality of a first type of contacts and a female connector made of a metallic cylindrical body in which are housed a plurality of a second type of contact, as well as elastic mass connection means ensuring mass continuity between the bodies of said end pieces.

A connector of this type is described for example in European patents 41 418 and American 3 609 632 and 4 239 318. The connector described in these patents has a male connector on the outer periphery of which is formed a groove in which one comes to place a metallic ribbon.

This metal strip is held in the groove by a groove. This metallic tape, once in place, protrudes slightly above the throat. When coupling with the corresponding female end piece, this metal strip acts as a spring ensuring good friction of the male end piece on the female end piece and maintaining the coupling of these two end pieces. The ferrules having an electrically conductive body, this metal strip ensures mass continuity between them so as to protect the electrical signals conveyed by the contacts of this connector from external high frequency disturbances.

However; it has been realized that such a spring, generally produced in the form of a ribbon provided with flat convolutions in order to allow its easier introduction into the corresponding groove, provides only a medium-quality ground contact between the two end caps. In particular, it can be seen that with respect to radio frequency, electromagnetic waves as well as with respect to electromagnetic pulses, such a ground connection is insufficient.

In order to improve ground continuity, the connector according to the invention is characterized in that said elastic means consist of at least one row of bent conductive elastic fingers, connected by one of their ends to a continuous metal strip comprising at least one row of perforations arranged substantially parallel to the row of elastic fingers, each metal strip, capped by a retaining ring, being made integral with one of the end pieces by means of at least one cord of a means electrically conductive fastening disposed in a groove formed in said tip, placed under a row of perforations and passing through it so as to also secure the ring and said tip.

Preferably, the fixing means will consist of a solder bead, the retaining rings being metallic.

To further improve the protection of the connector against the waves mentioned above, it will include two parallel rows of elastic fingers connected together by a metal strip provided with perforations, the fingers of a row being staggered compared to those in the other row.

Each parallel row of elastic metal fingers connected to each other by a metal strip can be arranged either inside the female end piece (or base), or preferably outside the male end piece, in a groove located at near the front face of this end piece (or plug), in a part of said male end piece which will be covered by the female end piece after coupling.

In order to facilitate the mounting of the metal strip and its fingers, the retaining ring closest to the coupling face of the endpiece of which it is integral will come into abutment against a corresponding flange of said endpiece body and will bear on its face opposite the second tip of the first polarizing means cooperating with second polarizing means carried by the second tip. Such an assembly system simplifies the manufacture of the end caps as well as the positioning of the keying pins on the end caps. Indeed, it suffices then, for a given type of connector, to have a single tip body for each of the male and female types and as many fixing rings as desired with the corresponding keying keys. This makes it possible to rationalize the manufacturing.

L'invention concerne également un procédé de fabrication d'un embout tel que décrit ci-dessus, procédé dans lequel on créé une rainure dans l'embout correspondant, on place dans cette rainure un cordon de brasure puis on vient placer une bague de maintien au-dessus de cette rainure, on glisse ensuite sous la bague une bande métallique cylindrique perforée portant sur l'un de ses bords des doigts métalliques élastiques cambrés, ladite bande comportant au moins une rangée de perforations placées au-dessus du cordon de brasure, et enfin on place l'embout avec son axe disposé verticalement, dans une enceinte à une température et pendant une durée suffisantes pour faire fondre la brasure qui d'une part traverse alors les perforations pour venir solidariser la bague sur la bande métallique à travers les perforations et d'autre part s'insère entre la bande métallique et la bague ainsi que le corps d'emboutThe invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a nozzle as described above, method in which a groove is created in the corresponding nozzle, a brazing bead is placed in this groove and then a retaining ring is placed above this groove, there is then slipped under the ring a perforated cylindrical metal strip carrying on one of its edges arched elastic metal fingers, said strip comprising at least one row of perforations placed above the brazing bead, and finally the end piece is placed with its axis arranged vertically, in an enclosure at a temperature and for a sufficient time to melt the solder which on the one hand then crosses the perforations to come to secure the ring on the metal strip through the perforations and on the other hand fits between the metal band and the ring as well as the end body

  • - la figure 1, une vue en coupe d'un connecteur selon l'art antérieur;
  • - la figure 2, une vue en coupe du même connecteur avec la modification selon l'invention;
  • - la figure 3, une vue de dessus d'une bande de contact selon l'invention;

The invention will be better understood with the aid of the following embodiments given without limitation, together with the figures which represent:
  • - Figure 1, a sectional view of a connector according to the prior art;
  • - Figure 2, a sectional view of the same connector with the modification according to the invention;
  • - Figure 3, a top view of a contact strip according to the invention;
  • - Figure 4, an alternative embodiment of Figure 2.

In Figure 1 is shown a sectional view of a cylindrical connector of the prior art. This connector comprises a male connector M, a female connector F and a coupling ring B to maintain the coupling of the two connectors M and F. The male end piece M comprises a cylindrical body 1 in which are housed a plurality of female electrical contacts 10, of which a single copy is shown in the figure. This electrical contact 10 passes through, in a manner known per se, a rigid dielectric 17 provided with openings for the passage of contacts such as 10, this dielectric ending in a cylindrical plate 11 against which the elements such as 18 and 19 come up against maintain contact 10 in the nozzle. A third flexible dielectric 12 in cylindrical form is also fixed against the dielectric plate 11, up to the rear part of the end piece M, from which electrical wires such as 13 emerge. This flexible dielectric, under the effect of pressure, ensures the rear seal of the nozzle M.

The female endpiece F comprises a cylindrical body 2 in which are housed a plurality of contacts such as 9, passing through a dielectric body 15 and connected to an electric wire 14 emerging on the rear face of the female endpiece (a single account takes together contacts 9 and wires 14 has been shown in the figure). The male contact 9 projects from the front face of the dielectric 15 so as to allow its connection with the female contact 10 during the coupling of the male M and female F ends. This coupling, as shown in the figure, is maintained by a coupling ring B coming in this case to be screwed onto the female endpiece F while being held on the male endpiece M by a stop 19 secured thereto and on its rear face by a retaining washer 4. To ensure on the one hand a contact, a gentle friction for example, between the two end pieces M and F, and on the other hand a good ground contact between said end pieces, a groove 7 is provided on the outer periphery of the end piece male M, groove for housing a spring 8 consisting of a flat metal band provided with convolutions, of width less than that of the groove, and flush slightly above the upper level of this groove- (see European patent 41 418). In this way, sufficient friction is produced during coupling to maintain the two ferrules one inside the other before the coupling ring is screwed on the one hand and a ground continuity between the two ferrules M and F of electrically conductive material on the other hand.

This ground continuity is insufficient for protection against radio frequency signals (RFI), electromagnetic signals (EMI) and electromagnetic pulses (EMP). The connector of FIG. 1 has been modified so as to ensure an improved mass continuity between the two ends while ensuring the elastic retaining function between them.

In this figure, the same elements as those of the previous figure have the same references. The cylindrical body of the male end piece M has been modified at the level of the elastic means for holding and continuity of mass. It has two grooves 305, 306 in which are placed a weld bead, on which bands of elastic fingers forming a contact are placed and held on the edge (see FIG. 3), contacts represented in this figure by the references 304 and 302. On the metal strip common to the contacts such as 304, a metal strip provided with perforations (see FIG. 3) is arranged a cylindrical ring 200 under which the part 330 of this strip has been slid. This metal ring has a groove into which the metal strip 350 is introduced. The height of this ring is less than the height of the contacts 304 and 302 so, of course, so as not to hinder the coupling and the electrical contact between the two end caps. The contact 302 is, for its part, arranged with its metal strip 350 provided with perforations 331, 332, 333, ... also above the groove 306 provided with a weld bead 301, metal strip holding the contacts being itself held in place by a ring 300. This ring 300 is in close contact at 351 with the body 100 of the male end piece and comes into abutment against 352 by means of the recess 353, the height of this recess being sufficient to tolerate the introduction of the metal strip such as 350 under this ring 300. The latter also has in its upper part of the coding 354 cooperating with adapted grooves in the female endpiece F.

Un tel connecteur présente en outre l'avantage d'une conception modulaire permettant notamment de fixer une bague 300 portant des clés de détrompage telles que 354 variable d'un embout M à l'autre tout en conservant la même structure de base 100 pour cet emboutSuch a connector also has the advantage of a modular design allowing in particular to fix a ring 300 carrying keying keys such as 354 variable from one end piece M to the other while retaining the same basic structure 100 for this mouthpiece

La réalisation de l'embout M complet selon l'invention se déroule selon le procédé ci-après :The production of the complete nozzle M according to the invention takes place according to the following method:

On a ferrule 100 provided with its grooves 305, 306 (in the case of a single row of contact fingers such as 304 or 302, the ferrule would only have one groove likewise in the event of pluralities of rows of contacts, number of grooves, is identical to the number of rows fixed), a weld bead 303, 301 is placed in these grooves, then the sleeve of the ring 200 is positioned. Then place part 330 of the metal strip 350 provided with its perforations 331, 332, 333, etc ... (see Figure 3) and its contact fingers 302, 312, 322, etc ... under said ring so that the perforations 331, 332, 333, etc ... are located substantially above the corresponding weld bead 303, 301. The second series of contacts is then positioned such as 302 with the perforations above the groove and the corresponding weld bead, in the same way as previously with respect to the ring 300. The entire end piece is then placed in an enclosure at a temperature ture sufficient to melt the solder and for a sufficient time for this solder to allow by capillary fixing through the openings 331, 332, 333, etc ... rings such as 200 and 300 to the tip itself 100. Preferably, during this step of welding said rings, the end piece will be placed vertically (this end piece is shown horizontally in the figure) so as to allow diffusion of the weld by capillarity between the metal strip 350 and the body 100 d on the one hand as well as between the metallic strip 350 and the ring 200 on the other hand in order to ensure a better connection of mass and better mechanical fixing of the assembly. In order to avoid the diffusion of the solder towards the contacts 302, 304, the ring 300 will be placed in a lower position relative to the ring 200. Of course, it is also possible while obtaining less good results from the point of view of continuity mass but markedly improved compared to the prior art, to place in the grooves such as 305 and 306 a bead of glue such as a one or two-component epoxy conductive glue, polyurethane, etc. so as to ensure the joining of the ring of the metal strip and the tip body 100.

Likewise, the male and female electrical contacts can be arranged as desired in one or the other of the end pieces.

Le procédé de montage est identique au cas de la figure 2 et les avantages qui découlent de la structure modulaire sont les mêmes.FIG. 4 represents an alternative embodiment of the invention in which the metal strips such as 350 provided with their perforations and carrying the contact fingers are arranged inside the body of the female end piece. It is provided with grooves such as 405, 406 then we then place the contact strips 401 with their perforations below the grooves filled with solder or glue, then we place successively the ring 403, the row of contacts 402 (placed as above) and the ring 404 which abuts at 408 against the end piece body and which carries at its lower part the female or male polarizations cooperating with corresponding polarizations such as 354 in FIG. 2. The mounting method is identical to the case of FIG. 2 and the advantages which flow from the modular structure are the same.
