Description
The invention relates to a substrate for ink jet printing and a method for its production according to the preambles of
The ink-jet printing process is one of the most important structuring processes for the production of full-color displays based on light-emitting semiconducting polymers (LEPs). In this case, small drops of a solution of the corresponding polymer are applied to a suitable substrate. However, the ink jet printing process is also used in other technical fields, for example, for applying color filters or DNA sensors to a substrate.
All of these applications require accurate placement of the materials (ink) to be applied on a predetermined active area. Ink jet printing technology is known as one of the technologies satisfying these requirements. In ink-jet printing, an ink is prepared by dissolving the active substance to be applied in an auxiliary substance. This ink is then applied in small quantities in drop form to the substrate to be coated, e.g. applied by piezo or "bubble jet" ink jet technology. The precise positioning of the drop on the substrate is realized inter alia by mechanically positioning the ink jet head relative to the substrate. After evaporation of the auxiliary substance, the active substance forms a film on the active surface of the substrate.
One of the most common mistakes encountered in printing is the leakage of the droplet from the active area into adjacent areas of the substrate. For the application of the display elements based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), this means a mixing of colors, since here red, green or blue emitting areas are arranged in close proximity to each other.
The basic principle underlying OLED devices is electroluminescence. Here, electrons and holes are injected into a semiconducting material through suitable contacts. The recombination of these charge carriers produces light.
Piezo inkjet printing technology is one of the most important patterning technologies in the production of polymeric OLED based full-color displays. Here, small drops of a solution containing the active substance (hole-transporting or light-emitting materials) are applied to the active surface of a suitable substrate. The dimension of these active areas (single pixel) for a high-resolution display element, as used for example in modern mobile phones, is in the range of 40 microns × 180 microns.
Prior art ink-jet heads can produce ink drops larger than 30 μm in diameter. Thus, the droplet diameter is in the same size range as the pixel to be coated. To prevent overflow of the drop, the surface of the substrate is designed by appropriate measures. Basically, two strategies are pursued: First, a substrate surface is created so that areas with different surface energies and thus with different coverage properties for the ink arise. A second possibility is to use geometric (mechanical) barriers to prevent overflow of the droplet.
The inorganic layer acts as a boundary zone with high surface energy and facilitates the application of homogeneous polymer films by the ink jet printing process.
However, the application and patterning of this layer requires processes that are typically used in the semiconductor industry. For the deposition of layers, sputtering processes and gas phase processes such as PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) are possible. These processes require long cycle times and are also expensive, which reduces the cost advantage gained through OLED technology. In addition, the second layer involves the formation of a surface topography, i. the low surface energy areas (here called "separators") lift off the substrate surface at finite height. Due to this height profile, the deposited polymer film can form an undesirable thickness profile by bulging upwards in the edge regions on the separators. Depending on the dimensions, this bulging may extend into the pixels.

The present invention has for its object to provide a substrate having a substrate surface with a large contrast of the surface energies. The substrate surface should have only slight height differences. Another object is that only organic materials should be used to pattern the substrate surface. Furthermore, the substrate should be less expensive to produce than the known substrates according to the prior art for a given surface contrast and other quality requirements.
This object is achieved by the features in the characterizing part of claim 1 (claim) and the features in the characterizing part of claim 9 (method claim) in conjunction with the features in the preamble. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are contained in the subclaims.
A particular advantage of the substrate according to the invention is that it has areas with different surface energies, which have a very low surface profile and consist exclusively of organic materials. For this purpose, a discontinuous layer structure of fluorinated hydrocarbon or polysiloxane is arranged on the photoresist structure on a base substrate which has on its surface a non-continuous photoresist layer structure. The fluorinated hydrocarbon is preferably polytetrafluoroethylene. The substrate according to the invention thus consists of a base substrate, which is preferably made of glass, plastic or silicon, and two layer structures arranged on the base substrate. The photoresist layer structure fulfills the task of exposing the exposed active areas, e.g. Indium tin oxide to be defined as the anode of an OLED display. In this case, the active areas are those areas of the base substrate or of a layer (for example of indium tin oxide) above the base substrate which are not covered by the photoresist layer structure. Another object of the photoresist layer structure is to protect underlying electronic circuits such as thin film transistor devices. The layer structure of a fluorinated hydrocarbon or polysiloxane according to the invention has a low surface energy. The layer structure consisting of polysiloxane or a fluorinated hydrocarbon is structured according to the invention such that polysiloxane or fluorinated hydrocarbon is arranged only outside the active surfaces. Due to the low surface energy of these materials, bleeding of later applied ink (by ink jet printing) can be avoided. In this case, the ink to be applied to the substrate according to the invention in the ink-jet printing process consists of a solution which contains the substances to be applied, for example a polymer for a display based on organic light-emitting diodes. However, the substrate according to the invention is not limited to the field of application of the inkjet printing process for displays based on organic light emitting diodes. Thus, the ink may alternatively comprise color filters or DNA sensors, which can be applied to a substrate according to the invention by means of the inkjet printing process.
The layer of fluorinated hydrocarbon or polysiloxane overlying the photoresist layer structure may completely or even partially cover the underlying photoresist layer structure. Structuring of the layer consisting of fluorinated hydrocarbon or polysiloxane must always be on the premise that between two adjacent active areas (pixels) a sufficient structure of fluorinated hydrocarbon or polysiloxane is arranged, due to which overflow of the ink due to the low surface energy These materials can be effectively prevented.
The layer structure described herein (consisting of a base substrate, a photoresist layer structure and a layer structure consisting of a fluorinated hydrocarbon or polysiloxane) has a high intrinsic contrast in the surface energy. The active surfaces, such as indium-tin-oxide as well as photoresist, represent surfaces with a high surface energy between 50 mN / m and 100 mN / m. In contrast, the layer structure of fluorinated Hydrocarbon or polysiloxane (hereinafter called barrier layer / barrier layer structure) has a surface energy of about 20 mN / m, whereby a high surface contrast advantageously without further surface treatment, such. As a plasma treatment can be achieved.
Another advantage of the invention is that the following surface treatments, which are required for example for the production of organic light-emitting diodes, such. For example, the cleaning of the indium-tin-oxide layer by a UV-ozone treatment can be used without restriction since they have no negative influence on the high contrast of the surface energies of the substrate according to the invention.
In a preferred embodiment variant, it is provided according to the invention to increase the surface energy of the active surfaces (pixels, for example indium tin oxide) by means of an oxygen plasma treatment. It is particularly advantageous that the surface energy of the barrier layer is not significantly affected, so that the surface contrast can be significantly increased due to the oxygen plasma treatment.
The photoresist layer structure preferably has a height of between 100 nm and 3000 nm, the barrier layer preferably a height of 1 nm to 300 nm. The photoresist layer structure preferably has a surface energy between 50 mN / m and 100 mN / m, the barrier layer preferably has a surface energy between 10 mN / m and 40 mN / m.
In the method for producing a substrate for ink-jet printing according to the present invention, at least one photoresist layer pattern is first applied to a base substrate, followed by coating a non-continuous layer structure consisting of fluorinated hydrocarbon or polysiloxane. The photoresist is a conventional novolac-based photoresist, an acrylic varnish, epoxy varnish or polyimide varnish, the application and patterning being realized by standard technologies such as varnishing, exposure and development.
The application of the barrier layer (layer structure of fluorinated hydrocarbon or polysiloxane) is preferably carried out by the CVD method (Chemical Vapor Deposition) z. B. using C 3 F 8 or by thermal evaporation, preferably a fluorinated hydrocarbon such as polytetrafluoroethylene.
The barrier layer thus deposited is subsequently patterned by using a shadow mask, by laser ablation or by using a lift-off process.
A further advantage according to the invention is that the high contrast is optimally suitable for the definition of the areas (active areas) on the base substrate which are produced by organic or aqueous solutions or suspensions (surface energies of 30 mN / m or 70 mN / m) by inkjet printing to be coated. For both solutions, the barrier layer (e.g., teflon layer), with its low surface energy, acts to prevent overcoating (coating) and hence leakage through this barrier layer. On the other hand, these solutions cover areas of high surface energy, such as ITO or the photoresist layer structure, which leads to locally as well as geometrically controlled film formation.
It is furthermore advantageous that the high, repelling effect of the barrier layer (for example Teflon layer) is effective even at very low layer thicknesses. Thus, the layer thickness can be very low, e.g. be kept below 100 nm. It is directly related that the barrier layer has a very slight shadowing effect on a metal layer applied in a later step by thermal evaporation (e.g., cathode layer for an OLED display). Furthermore, a complete edge coverage is ensured by the fact that the layer thickness of the metal layer is significantly larger than that of the barrier layer and larger than that of the photoresist layer structure. Thus, the inhomogeneous metal layer thickness occurring in the prior art on the flanks and in the edge region of the "Banks" is excluded. This is a very great advantage for active matrix OLED devices, because it avoids the high electrical resistance occurring in the prior art over the partially segmented metal layer there, whereby the power consumption can be significantly reduced, which among other things to a higher reliability of active matrix OLED devices.
A further advantage according to the invention is that the width of the barrier layer (Teflon layer) of less than 5 μm, which is required for achieving a low surface energy and thus a high repelling effect on the inks used, is very small. As a result, the space required for the separation of two adjacent pixels drops significantly in contrast to the known solutions ("Banks" have widths of> 10 microns, especially to achieve mechanical stability). As a result, a higher screen resolution (picture elements per area) can be achieved. In the case of "top-emitting" display elements (components in which the light emission does not go in the direction of the electrical drive), a larger aspect ratio (ratio of emitting surface to the entire pixel area) can be achieved.
It is further advantageous that the layer thickness homogeneity of inkjet-printed layers within the active area is increased. Layer thickness inhomogeneities are caused by drying phenomena at the interfaces of areas of different surface energy. Due to the small width of the barrier layer (s) a greater distance of this layer to the active surface (eg ITO) is possible without a concomitant reduction in screen resolution.
Moreover, by using only organic materials, a simple technology for creating and structuring the layers can be used. As a result, the use of complex technical equipment, such as sputtering or plasma etching can be avoided, resulting in a cost advantage.
