Abstract

技术领域
本发明一般地涉及数据网络。更具体地说,本发明涉及在这种数据网络中的路由器、交换机和其他网络设备的配置。
背景技术
在对诸如局域网、存储区域网等等的网络进行配置时可能遇到若干限制。诸如路由器、交换机和网桥等等的各种网络设备可以用来配置这种网络。这些网络设备中的某些具有比其他网络设备更大的能力。例如,某些设备可以被容易地配置为支持添加在物理网络(例如,虚拟局域网(“VLAN”)或虚拟存储区域网(“VSAN”))之上的逻辑网络,而某些则不能。
为了允许多个VLAN共享在底层物理拓扑上的单个交换机间链路,Cisco Systems公司开发了交换机间链路协议(“ISL”)。例如参见于1998年4月21日授予Cisco Systems公司的题为“Interswitch linkmechanism for connecting high-performance network switches”的美国专利No.5,742,604,该专利的发明人为Edsall等人,这里为了所有目的通过参考将该专利结合于此。ISL提供了一种封装机制,该封装机制用于基于网络中不同交换机的端口之间的VLAN关联而在那些端口之间传输分组。

发明内容
根据本发明的某些方面,为在构成网络架构一部分的网络设备的对等端口之间的通信提供了一种新协议(在这里称作交换对等参数(“EPP”))。在某些实施方式中,EPP协议用来交换信息,并且/或者配置FC网络的E端口或F端口。

图1图示了根据本发明的某些优选方面的网络100,该网络是存储区域网(“SAN”)。尽管下面的描述将集中于SAN及其相应协议等,但是本发明也适用于其他网络,例如LAN。

在本领域中众所周知,网络设备和存储区域网的节点之间的连接通常经由光纤提供。根据各种格式在这种网络中传输数据,但是最常见的是使用光纤信道协议。
某些网络设备可被配置为支持一种新型帧格式,这种帧格式被称作扩展交换机间链路(“EISL”)格式,该格式是转让给Andiamo Systems的其他未决专利申请的主题。据此为了所有目的,通过参考将美国专利申请号为10/034,160的申请中的EISL的某些实施例和应用的描述结合于此。在一个实施例中,EISL格式允许单个网络设备处理具有不同格式的帧或分组。例如,被配置为支持EISL的网络设备可以处理FC帧和以太网帧。EISL格式也支持VLAN、VSAN和类似特征。

EISL帧200由帧开始定界符(“SOF”)205和帧结束定界符(“EOF”)280来限界。这些定界符使得支持EISL的端口能够在任何时候以标准格式接收帧。如果支持EISL的端口未处于EISL模式而接收EISL格式的帧,则该端口根据本发明的某些方面接受该帧。然而,该端口可能无法以EISL格式发送帧。
在本实施方式中,EISL头部260包括VSAN字段240,该字段指定载荷270中的虚拟存储区域网编号。VSAN允许多个逻辑的或“虚拟的”存储区域网基于单个物理存储区域网。因此,EISL头部260的VSAN字段240指示该帧所属的虚拟存储区域网。
MPLS标签栈字段265提供用于FC帧和以太网帧两者的公共转发机制。循环冗余校验(“CRC”)字段275用于检错。
交换链路参数(“ELP”)协议是一种现有的FC协议,该协议用于与E端口进行通信。类似地,交换交换机能力(“ESC”)协议也是一种现有FC协议,这种协议用于E端口之间的通信。这些协议都可以用来交换关于网络设备的能力的信息。

在图5的部分505中交换的信息代表EPP的检测阶段,在该阶段中,检测出附接的对等端口的EPP能力。根据本方法的一种实现方式,检测阶段505是使用ELP和ESC来执行的。

除了交换管理中继线模式信息外,在SYNC阶段510期间,端口A和端口B还可以交换VSAN列表信息。现在将参考图7来解释根据一种这样的实现方式的VSAN列表信息的交换。在该实施例中,端口A和端口B交换指示允许哪种VSAN的位图。在这里,端口A向端口B发送位图705,在该位图中,位1至5具有值“1”,这指示应当允许VSAN 1至5。随后,端口B发送位图710,该位图指示应当允许VSAN 4至8。在优选实施方式中,位图指示多于(或者少于)8个VSAN的状态,并且包括相应更多(或者更少)的位数。
然后,端口A和端口B,或者与各个端口相关联的网络设备计算交叉位图,该交叉位图指示对这两个端口公用的VSAN。在这种情形中,交叉位图715指示允许VSAN 4和5。在本发明的某些实施方式中,在EPP_SYNC阶段结束时计算该交叉位图。在本发明的其他实施方式中,在其他时刻计算交叉位图。但是,这个过程应当发生在提交阶段开始之前。
在已经计算出交叉位图之后,与端口A和端口B相关联的网络设备都会在存储器中存储该交叉位图,并且只准许VSAN 4和5沿着这条数据路径发送数据帧。VSAN 4和5被称作在端口A和端口B之间的链路上的“运行VSAN”。
根据本发明的某些实施方式,在SYNC阶段510期间交换的配置信息包括端口VSAN信息。在本发明的某些这种方面中,当这些端口正充当非中继端口时,端口VSAN信息尤其重要。如果这些端口正充当中继端口,则EISL头部将包含指示该帧所属VSAN的VSAN编号。
但是,根据本发明的某些方面,如果端口未充当中继端口,则不会存在EISL头部,并且因此没有VSAN编号。如果端口不是中继端口,则以原始FC格式传输帧,而不是以EISL格式传输。但是,VSAN将被隐含地与每个帧相关联。这个VSAN就是接收端口的端口VSAN。
缺省情况下,每个E端口都具有等于1的端口VSAN编号。但是,也可以分配各种端口VSAN编号。如果多个端口VSAN编号之间存在不匹配,则根据本发明的各个方面可以发生各种动作。根据某些这种方面,例如,如果端口VSAN编号为1的端口向端口VSAN编号为2的端口发送了分组,则会通知系统管理员。根据本发明的其他方面,如果发生了这种端口VSAN不匹配,则会使端口中的一个或多个不能工作。
在步骤560结束时,端口A得知端口B的配置信息,并且端口B得知端口A的配置信息。在步骤565中,端口A向端口B发送确认,指出它已经接收到端口B的EPP_SYNC配置信息。然后,过程的EPP_SYNC阶段终结。在完成SYNC阶段510时,端口A和端口B将对需要被应用的配置信息进行评估。
在当前实施例中,端口A和端口B被配置为中继E端口。因此,在EPP_Commit阶段515之前,端口B在编程步骤568中被配置为中继E端口。根据本发明的某些方面,编程步骤568包括支持中继模式操作和准备EISL帧所需的硬件编程。在一种实例中,当使端口能够用于中继模式时,所有帧都以EISL格式传输。
当步骤568完成时,通过从端口B向端口A发送EPP_Commit请求,而在步骤570中开始EPP_Commit阶段。在端口A接收到EPP_Commit请求之后,在步骤、572中端口A执行它自己的编程操作,该步骤与端口B的编程步骤568并行。根据本发明的某些方面,编程步骤572包括支持中继模式操作和准备EISL帧所需的硬件编程。在一种实例中,当使端口能够用于中继模式时,所有帧都以EISL格式传输。然后,在步骤575中,端口A向端口B发送SW_ACC,指出端口A已经完成它的编程步骤。
然后,在步骤580中,端口B向端口A发送确认,指出已接收到在步骤575中发送的SW_ACC,并且在其一侧已完成了EPP提交交换。这时,端口A已经完成了EPP提交交换。在本实施例中,这意味着端口A和端口B现在都已被配置为用于中继线模式操作。
在端口A和端口B已传输数据之后的某一时刻,操作员可以决定重新配置端口的某些方面。例如,可以在端口之一或其两者上改变VSAN编号,并且应当需要计算新的交叉位图。如果这样,则前述过程就不需要通过ELP阶段和ESC阶段返回,而是可以直接前进至EPP_SYNC阶段和EPP_Commit阶段。
下面将参考图7A来略述这一过程。在步骤750中,网络管理员把端口A的本地管理中继线模式从“自动”改变到“开启”。在步骤755中,EPP SYNC过程与图5的步骤550并行开始,在步骤550中,端口A的新的本地管理中继线模式被传输到端口B。在步骤760中,端口B向端口A发送“ACK”。在本实施例中,(端口B的)对等管理中继线模式仍旧设置为“自动”。因此,在步骤765中,端口B向端口A发送其对等管理中继线模式,而在步骤770中端口A用“ACK”作出响应,并且在步骤775中,两个端口都将它们的运行中继线模式改变到T(中继)。在步骤780中,执行中继操作所需的EPP提交编程。
图8根据本发明的一个方面,从发起端口的角度图示出EPP方法的过程流的流程图。第一步骤是步骤805,即就绪状态。在步骤810中,EPP_SYNC请求被发送到接收端口。在步骤815中,发起端口请求来自接收端口的针对该EPP_SYNC请求的接受。如果在预定时间内接收到响应,则在步骤820中评估该响应。如果在预定时间内未接收到响应,则方法前进到步骤830,并且发起端口进入重试等待状态。
有些时候,在端口A正等待针对端口A的EPP_SYNC请求的响应期间,端口B会发送它自己的EPP_SYNC请求。这种情形被称作“冲突”。如果发生了冲突,则在步骤816中,端口A判断是否接受来自端口B的EPP_SYNC请求。如果端口A的确接受来自端口B的EPP_SYNC请求,则过程继续到图9的步骤910,下面将对其详细描述。如果端口A未接受来自端口B的EPP_SYNC请求,则在步骤817中,端口A向端口B发送拒绝(例如,“SW_RJT”)。然后,过程返回步骤815。
在步骤835中,判断是否超出重试计数或者时间。如果超过该重试计数,则会报告故障,并且系统将返回就绪状态。如果未超出重试计数,则在步骤810中将再次发送EPP_SYNC请求,并且过程从步骤810继续前进。
在步骤820中,如果确定响应是可以接受的,则方法前进到步骤825,在该步骤中,系统等待EPP_Commit状态。如果在步骤820中确定响应是不可接受的,则向接收端口发送SW_RJT响应,并且发起端口返回到步骤805的就绪状态。
如果在步骤825中发起端口接收到EPP_Commit,则过程继续到步骤840,在该步骤中,在发起端口上执行硬件编程。在步骤845中,判断是否完成该硬件编程。如果未完成,则方法前进到步骤855,在该步骤中,报告硬件编程步骤,并且系统进入步骤830的重试状况。如果硬件编程是成功的,则方法前进到步骤850,并且向接收端口传输对EPP_Commit的SW_ACC响应。
然后,过程继续到步骤860,在该步骤中,发起端口等待来自接收端口的确认。如果在预定的时间内未接收到确认,则过程前进到步骤855。如果在预定的时间内接收到确认,则发起端口返回步骤805的就绪状态。
图9从接收端口的角度指出EPP过程。在步骤905中,接收端口处于就绪状态中。在步骤910中,向发起端口发送针对EPP_SYNC的SW_ACC。在步骤915中,接收端口等待对SW_ACC响应的确认。如果在预定的时间内未接收到这一响应,则超时,并且接收端口返回到步骤905的就绪状态。如果在预定的时间内接收到确认,则方法前进到步骤920,并且在接收端口上执行硬件编程。在步骤925中,判断是否完成硬件编程。如果未完成,则在步骤930中作出故障报告,并且接收端口返回到步骤905中的就绪状态。如果硬件编程已完成,则方法前进到步骤935,并且向发起端口发送EPP_Commit。
在步骤940中,接收端口等待针对它已向发起端口发送了的EPP_Commit的SW_ACC。如果在预定的时间内未接收到这种响应,则过程前进到步骤930,并且报告故障。然后,接收端口返回到步骤905的就绪状态。如果在预定的时间中接收到了响应,则方法前进到步骤945,并且评估该响应。如果确定该响应是可接受的,则通知成功。在步骤950中,如果未确定该响应是可接受的,则报告错误,并且系统返回到905的就绪状态。
图10图示了根据本发明的某些实施方式的EPP头部字段的成分、值和大小。其他实施方式可以具有更多或更少的字段。此外,这些字段可以具有除图10所示长度之外的长度。
在使用SW_ILS的本发明的一种实施方式中,命令标识符字段指示从供应商专用的命令标识符范围中选出的值。命令标识符例如可以指示EPP请求、SW_RJT(拒绝)或者SW_ACC(接受)。在一种实施方式中,命令ID的值是0X71000000。修订字段标识EPP服务的修订。对于第一次修订,该值为1。每次在EPP头部中有变化时,该修订号码都应当改变。
如上所述,在某些实现方式中,EPP使用两阶段机制来建立运行环境。第一阶段是同步阶段(EPP_SYNC),在该阶段中,两侧的配置信息被同步。第二阶段是提交阶段(EPP_Commit),在该阶段中,执行实际的硬件编程。EPP命令码字段用来标识EPP请求序列是来自EPP_SYNC阶段,还是来自EPP_Commit阶段。
会话字段用来标识在发起EPP请求序列的一侧的具体会话。在某些错误或者故障情形中,EPP将重试它的协议交换。对于EPP操作的每次重试,都会改变会话编号。这种特征帮助识别旧的会话。
全球名称(WWN)指示端口所属的网络设备的WWN。根据本发明的某些方面,WWN信息用于解决同时发生的EPP_SYNC请求的“冲突”。
载荷长度字段用来标识包括EPP头部的载荷全长。保留字段为将来使用而保留。
时常会有2个端口同时相互发送EPP请求。这种“冲突”可以基于该端口所关联到的网络设备的WWN来解决。具有较低WWN的网络设备中的端口将向其他端口发送SW_ACC。其网络设备具有该WWN的端口将把SW_RJT和指示冲突的原因码一起发送给另一个端口。
通常,可以在软件和/或硬件中实现本发明的技术。例如,可以在操作系统的内核中、分离的用户进程中、绑定到网络应用的库数据包中、专门建造的机器上、或者网络接口卡上实现这些技术。在本发明的特定实施方式中,本发明的技术在诸如操作系统,或者在操作系统上运行的应用之类的软件中实现。
本发明的技术的软件实现或者软件/硬件混和实现方式可被实现在由存储在存储器中的计算机程序有选择地激活或者重配置的通用可编程机器上。这种可编程机器可以是被指定为处理网络流量的网络设备,例如,路由器或交换机。这种网络设备可以具有多个网络接口,例如包括帧中继和ISDN接口。这种网络设备的具体示例包括路由器和交换机。
例如,本发明的方法可以被实现在专门配置的网络设备中,例如,由加州San Jose的Cisco Systems公司制造的MDS 9000交换机族。从下面给出的描述中将清楚某些这种机器的普遍体系结构。在替换实施方式中,本发明的技术可以在诸如个人计算机或工作站之类的通用网络主机上实现。此外,本发明还可以在用于网络设备或通用计算设备的卡(例如,接口卡)上至少部分实现。
现在参考图11,适于实现本发明的技术的网络设备1160包括主中央处理单元(CPU)1162、接口1168和总线1167(例如,PCI总线)。当在适当的软件或固件的控制下动作时,CPU 1162可以负责实现与所需网络设备的功能相关联的特定功能。例如,当被配置为中间路由器时,CPU1162可以负责分析分组、封装分组、并且转发分组,以传输到机顶盒。CPU 1162优选地在包括操作系统(例如,Windows NT)的软件和任何适当的应用软件的控制下实现所有这些功能。
CPU 1162可以包括一个或多个处理器1163,例如来自Motorola微处理器族,或者MIPS微处理器族的处理器。在替换实施方式中,处理器1163被具体设计为用于控制网络设备1160的操作的硬件。在特定的实施方式中,存储器1161(例如,非易失性RAM和/或ROM)也构成CPU1162的一部分。但是,有许多种可以将存储器耦合到系统的方式。存储器模块1161可以用于多种目的,例如缓存和/或存储数据、对指令编程等。
接口1168一般被设置为接口卡(有时被称作“线路卡”)。通常,它们控制通过网络的数据分组的发送和接收,并且有时支持网络设备1160所使用的其他外设。这些接口中可以提供的是以太网接口、帧中继接口、线缆接口、DSL接口、令牌环接口等。另外,可以提供各种非常高速的接口,例如快速以太网接口、千兆位以太网接口、ATM接口、HSSI接口、POS接口、FDDI接口、ASI接口、DHEI接口等。通常,这些接口可以包括适于与合适的介质通信的端口。在某些情形中,它们还可以包括独立的处理器和(在某些实例中)易失性RAM。这些独立的处理器可以控制诸如分组交换、媒体控制和管理之类的通信密集型任务。通过提供用于通信密集型任务的分离处理器,这些接口允许主微处理器1162有效地执行路由计算、网络诊断、安全功能等。
尽管图11所示的系统图示了本发明的一种特定的网络设备,但是它决不是可以在其上实现本发明的唯一网络设备体系结构。例如,常常使用具有处理通信和路由计算等的单个处理器的体系结构。此外,网络设备也可以使用其他类型的接口和介质。
不管网络设备的配置如何,该网络设备都可以采用一个或多个存储器或存储模块(例如,存储块1165),这些存储器或存储模块被配置为存储数据、用于通用网络操作的程序指令和/或涉及在这里所描述的技术的功能的其他信息。程序指令可以控制例如操作系统和/或一个或多个应用的运行。
因为这种信息和程序指令可以用来实现这里所述的系统/方法,所以本发明涉及包括有用于执行这里所述的各种操作的程序指令、状态信息等的机器可读介质。机器可读介质的示例包括,但是不限于:诸如硬盘、软盘和磁带之类的磁介质;诸如CD-ROM盘之类的光介质;磁光介质;和被专门配置为存储并执行程序指令的硬件设备,例如,只读存储设备(ROM)和随机访问存储器(RAM)。本发明也可以包含在通过诸如无线电波、光线路、电线路等的合适介质传输的载波中。程序指令的示例包括诸如由编译器生成的机器代码,以及包含有可以由使用解释器的计算机所执行的高级代码的文件。
尽管已经参考本发明的特定实施方式具体图示并描述了本发明,但是本领域的技术人员应当理解,可以对所公开的实施方式的形式和细节作出改变,而不脱离本发明的精神和范围。例如,应当理解,这里所描述的由诸如路由器、交换机和/或其所选组件之类的网络设备所执行的功能中的至少一部分可以被实现在另一设备中。例如,可以由主机设备(例如,个人计算机或工作站)执行这些功能。这种主机例如可由网络管理员操作。考虑到这些和其他变化,应当参考所附权利要求来确定本发明的范围。
Claims (16)
1.一种用于修改与网络设备互连的对等端口的配置的方法,所述方法包括:
通过在第一网络设备的第一端口和第二网络设备的第二端口之间交换信息,确定包括所述第一端口和所述第二端口的互连的对等端口可以支持交换对等参数协议,其中,所述交换对等参数协议用于判断网络设备的端口是否可被配置为支持虚拟局域网、虚拟存储区域网和/或扩展交换机间链路;
在所述互连的对等端口之间使用所述交换对等参数协议来交换配置信息;和
根据所述交换的配置信息,配置所述互连的对等端口。
2.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中所述配置信息包括虚拟存储区域网信息。
3.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中所述配置信息包括关于端口是否可以被配置为支持扩展交换机间链路的中继线模式信息。
4.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中所述配置步骤还包括:根据所述交换的配置信息配置所述互连的对等端口的硬件。
5.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中所述配置步骤还包括:根据所述交换的配置信息配置所述互连的对等端口的软件。
6.一种用于修改网络设备的配置的方法,所述方法包括:
通过使用用于判断网络设备的端口是否可被配置为支持虚拟局域网、虚拟存储区域网和/或扩展交换机间链路的交换对等参数协议,确定第一网络设备的第一扩展端口可被配置为以扩展交换机间链路格式来传送帧,其中所述第一扩展端口被附接到第二网络设备的第二扩展端口;和
将所述第一扩展端口配置为以扩展交换机间链路格式来传送帧。
7.如权利要求6所述的方法,其中所述确定步骤包括:经由交换对等参数协议在所述第一扩展端口和所述第二扩展端口之间交换关于端口是否可以被配置为支持扩展交换机间链路的中继线模式信息。
8.如权利要求6所述的方法,其中所述配置步骤包括:将所述第一扩展端口的硬件和/或软件配置为能够以扩展交换机间链路格式来传送帧。
9.如权利要求6所述的方法,其中所述配置步骤包括:经由交换对等参数协议通知所述第二扩展端口,所述配置已被应用到所述第一扩展端口。
10.一种用于致使第一网络设备的第一扩展端口修改第二网络设备的第二扩展端口的配置的方法,所述方法包括以下步骤:
通过与所述第二扩展端口交换信息,确定所述第二扩展端口可被配置为用于以扩展交换机间链路格式来传送帧的中继端口;
经由交换对等参数协议在所述第一扩展端口和所述第二扩展端口之间交换配置信息,所述交换对等参数协议用于判断网络设备的端口是否可被配置为支持虚拟局域网、虚拟存储区域网和/或扩展交换机间链路;和
将所述第二扩展端口配置为中继端口。
11.如权利要求10所述的方法,其中所述确定步骤包括:经由交换链路参数协议在所述第一扩展端口和所述第二扩展端口之间交换信息。
12.如权利要求10所述的方法,其中所述确定步骤包括:经由交换交换机能力协议在所述第一扩展端口和所述第二扩展端口之间交换信息。
13.一种用于修改网络设备的配置的装置,所述装置包括:
用于通过在第一网络设备的第一端口和第二网络设备的第二端口之间交换信息,确定包括所述第一端口和所述第二端口的互连的对等端口可以支持交换对等参数协议的装置,其中,所述交换对等参数协议用于判断网络设备的端口是否可被配置为支持虚拟局域网、虚拟存储区域网和/或扩展交换机间链路;
用于在所述互连的对等端口之间使用所述交换对等参数协议来交换配置信息的装置;和
用于根据所述交换的配置信息来配置所述互连的对等端口的装置。
14.一种用于修改第二网络设备的配置的第一网络设备,所述第一网络设备被配置为执行以下步骤:
通过与所述第二网络设备的端口交换信息,确定所述第二网络设备的端口可以支持交换对等参数协议,所述交换对等参数协议用于判断网络设备的端口是否可被配置为支持虚拟局域网、虚拟存储区域网和/或扩展交换机间链路;和
致使所述端口基于经由交换对等参数协议在所述第一网络设备和所述端口之间交换的配置信息而被配置。
15.如权利要求14所述的第一网络设备,其中所述确定步骤包括:经由交换链路参数协议在所述第一网络设备和所述端口之间交换信息。
16.如权利要求14所述的第一网络设备,其中所述确定步骤包括:经由交换交换机能力协议在所述第一网络设备和所述端口之间交换信息。
