Abstract

本发明涉及使用CATV(有线电视)网作为信息传递媒体来交换信息的电缆调制解调器。
现有电缆调制解调器的例子示于图9。此电缆调制解调器81一方面通过75Ω同轴电缆82连接到CATV网(未图示)的CATV台(头端),而另一方面则通过LAN(局域网)电缆和USB(universal serial bus,通用串行总线)等电缆84a、84b、……连接到个人计算机等信息处理终端83a、83b、……(此系统将被称为现有系统1)。在图9中,标号91表示连接到RF同轴电缆100的机顶盒,标号92表示连接到该机顶盒的电视监视器。标号LO表示客厅,而标号L1和L2表示与其分离的其他房间。
另一方面,例如,日本专利申请公开No.H10-234028公开了一种设有CATV数据发送/接收单元和无线LAN单元的电缆调制解调器(CATV家庭单元)。这里,CATV数据发送/接收单元通过CATV电缆而连接到CATV网,并且通过无线LAN单元的无线通信而连接到各个信息处理终端(此系统将被称为现有系统2)。

另一方面,从上述现有系统1采用的有线通信切换到上述现有系统2采用的无线通信要求替换电缆调制解调器本身,从而要求附加的成本。
本发明的目的是提供一种具有无线通信功能的电缆调制解调器,能够容易和廉价地从有线通信切换到无线通信。
为了实现上述目的,根据本发明的一个方面,一种具有无线通信功能并且将CATV网用作信息传递媒体的电缆调制解调器设有:电缆调制解调器本体,通过同轴电缆连接到CATV网;和附加到其上的扩展单元,具有无线LAN功能,能够以无线方式与信息处理终端进行通信。这里,此扩展单元和电缆调制解调器本体通过使用可自由插拔的插头和连接器而耦合在一起。这使得能够容易地从有线通信切换到无线通信。

以下,参照附图来说明本发明的实施例。图1是本发明的具有无线通信功能的电缆调制解调器的系统结构方框图。图2是附加于信息处理终端的接口部的结构方框图。
在本实施例中,如图1所示,电缆调制解调器由电缆调制解调器本体A和扩展单元B构成。电缆调制解调器本体A包括:调谐器1;CATV端调制器/解调器2(DEMOD(解调器)2a和MOD(调制器)2b);第一MAC(媒体访问控制器)3;CPU 4;缓冲器5;以及第二MAC。扩展单元B包括:SS无线部7,在无线端执行调制/解调和变频;输出电平调节器8;以及天线9。另一方面,如图2所示,附加于信息处理终端27的接口部C包括:输出电平调节器21;接收放大器(功率放大器)22;变频器23;调制器/解调器24;MAC25;以及输出控制器26。
调谐器1选择从CATV网接收到的信息,将其转换为可解调的中频,然后将其馈送到解调器2a。调谐器1还包括滤波器,通过其将已调信号发送到CATV网。这样,通过此滤波器,调谐器1将从调制器2b馈送的信息发出到CATV网,并且将来自CATV网的信息取入到电缆调制解调器。
DEMOD(解调器)2a对从调谐器1馈送的、通常是QAM调制过的中频输出进行解调,将其转换为数据包,然后将其馈送到第一MAC3。另一方面,MOD(调制器)2b对第一MAC3的输出(即要被发送到CATV网的信息)进行调制,通常调制为QPSK信号格式,并且将其馈送到调谐器1。
第一MAC3将来自CATV网的信息和来自用户(subscriber)(end user,终端用户)的信息分类、整理为要在电缆调制解调器中被处理的信号和要发送到用户或CATV网的信号。第一MAC3还向或从数据包、即信息包中添加或除去首标(header)和脚标(footer),以转换数据包的格式。
CPU4控制输出信息的方向和定时,并且将要输出的信息临时存储到缓冲器5中。此外,实际上使用无线端网络,CPU4测量BER(比特误码率),并且根据这样测量出的BER,向扩展单元B的输出电平调节器8馈送指示其增加或减少无线端的输出电平的信号。此请求增加或减少输出电平的信号还通过扩展单元B的无线电路被发送到用户的接口部C(见图2)。根据此信号,用户的接口部C通过输出控制器26来调节输出电平调节器21的输出电平。然而,当不能保证连续通信时,允许用户将输出电平手动复位到最大电平。类似地,对于数据传递速率,也可以通过测量BER、根据测量出的BER来增加或减少数据传递速率。例如,通过图4所示的过程来实现这种输出电平和数据传递速率的调节。
具体地说,首先,测量无线网端的BER(步骤S1),并且检查测量出的BER值是否等于或大于第一预定阈值(步骤S2)。如果BER值小于第一阈值(即,如果步骤S2中的检查结果是“否”),则将请求减少输出电平的信号馈送到扩展单元B的输出电平调节器8以减少输出电平(步骤S3),并且将数据传递速率设置到最大值(步骤S4)。
另一方面,如果BER值等于或大于第一阈值(即,如果步骤S2中的检查结果是“是”),则检查BER值是否小于第二预定阈值(这里,第二阈值>第一阈值)(步骤S5)。如果BER值小于第二阈值(即,如果步骤S5中的检查结果是“是”),则判断当前输出电平足够,并且结束过程而不输出信号。
另一方面,如果BER值等于或大于第二阈值(即,如果步骤S5中的检查结果是“否”),则检查输出电平调节器8的输出电平是否已经达到上限(步骤S6)。如果输出电平未达到上限(即,如果步骤S6中的检查结果是“否”),则将请求增加输出电平的信号馈送到扩展单元B的输出电平调节器8以增加输出电平(步骤S7),并且将数据传递速率设定到最大值(步骤S4)。
与此相对,如果在步骤S6中发现输出电平已经达到上限(即,如果步骤S6中的检查结果是“是”),则再次测量无线网端的BER(步骤S8),并且再次检查测量出的BER值是否小于第二预定阈值(步骤S9)。如果BER值小于第二阈值(即,如果步骤S9中的检查结果是“是”),则判断输出电平足够,并且结束过程而不输出信号。
另一方面,如果BER值等于或大于第二阈值(即,如果步骤S9中的检查结果是“否”),则检查此时的数据传递速率是否处于最小值(步骤S10)。如果数据传递速率处于最小值,则结束过程。另一方面,如果数据传递速率未处于最小值(即,如果步骤S10中的检查结果是“否”),则进一步减少数据传递速率(步骤S11),然后过程返回到步骤S8。其后,重复步骤S8至S11的操作。
这里,在通过无线网连接多个信息处理终端的情况下,例如参照图5所示的管理表,对每个信息处理终端独立地调节输出电平和数据传递速率。在图5中,“CPE”表示“customer premises equipment(客户室内设备)”(安装在用户室内的设备),这是电缆调制解调器的标准(MCNS)中使用的术语。
用上述方式来调节输出电平和数据传递速率。
第二MAC6对无线端的数据进行转换和分类,并且还在电缆调制解调器本体和SS无线部7之间交换数据。在本实施例中,使用符合IP的数据包,因此,对于数据安全性,可以原封不动地使用现有的安全技术、例如使用公开或秘密密钥的安全技术。
SS无线部7执行无线端的用于发送的调制和用于接收的解调。对于此SS无线部7,可以容易地利用现有无线调制解调器中所用的调制/解调技术。
图6是第一和第二MAC3和6中的数据转换处理的协议栈图。图3示出本发明的采用电缆调制解调器的网络系统的结构示例图。如果与图9所示的现有例子相比,此结构的特点将会更清楚。在图9中,标号91表示机顶盒,标号92表示电视监视器,而27a和27b表示个人计算机。
在本实施例中,电缆调制解调器从CATV网接收到的信息首先被解调,然后第一MAC3将信息分离为电缆调制解调器本身所要求的控制信息和要发送到用户的信息处理终端的信息。此时,如果存在多个信息处理终端,则还需要识别将信息发送到哪个信息处理终端。然后,对这样分离的信息(要发送到信息处理终端的信息)进行调制,然后进行变频,然后发送到信息处理终端。
另一方面,电缆调制解调器通过接口部C从信息处理终端接收到的信息被解调,然后,在通过参照图5所示的管理表来识别发送方后,被分离为至电缆调制解调器本身的消息和要发送到CATV台(头端)的信息。然后此信息被调制,并且被送出到CATV网。
图7和图8是本发明的具有上述结构的无线通信功能的电缆调制解调器中的电缆调制解调器本体A和扩展单元B之间的耦合机构的示例外部透视图。
在图7所示的耦合机构中,在电缆调制解调器本体A上设有插头13,而在扩展单元B与其面对的部分上设有连接器12,整体构成插槽(slot-in)式耦合机构。
另一方面,在图8的耦合机构中,在电缆调制解调器本体A上设有LAN电缆的连接器(例如,RJ-45插座),而在扩展单元B与其面对的部分上设有LAN电缆的插头(例如,RJ-45插头)。通过使用LAN连接器将电缆调制解调器本体A和扩展单元B耦合在一起的此耦合机构使得能够容易地在有线和无线通信之间进行切换。
如上所述,根据本实施例,具有无线通信功能的电缆调制解调器设有:电缆调制解调器本体,通过同轴电缆连接到CATV网;和附加其上的扩展单元,具有无线LAN功能,能够以无线方式与信息处理终端进行通信。此外,此扩展单元和电缆调制解调器本体通过使用可自由插拔的插头和连接器而耦合在一起。这使得能够容易地从有线通信切换到无线通信。

Claims (8)

1、一种电缆调制解调器,包括:
电缆调制解调器本体,通过同轴电缆连接到CATV网;
扩展单元,具有无线LAN功能,能够以无线方式与信息处理终端进行通信;以及
连接部件,通过使用插头和连接器而将电缆调制解调器本体和扩展单元可拆卸地连接在一起。
2、如权利要求1所述的电缆调制解调器,
其中该插头是用于LAN电缆的插头,而该连接器是用于LAN电缆的连接器。
3、如权利要求1所述的电缆调制解调器,
其中以规则的时间间隔来测量扩展单元的比特误码率,从而根据测量结果来变化输出电平和数据传递速率,以便将通信质量保持在预定水平以上。
4、如权利要求3所述的电缆调制解调器,

第一媒体访问控制器将从解调器馈送的信息和通过扩展单元从信息处理终端馈送的信息分类为要在电缆调制解调器内处理的信号和要发送到信息处理终端和CATV网的信号;
第二媒体访问控制器在电缆调制解调器本体和扩展单元之间转换和交换数据。
