Abstract
Dental retention systems which facilitate the adjustment or removal of an oral appliance, e.g., a crown or bridge, from a reconfigurable abutment assembly are described. The adjustable abutment assembly may be secured to an anchoring implant bored into the bones within the mouth. The abutment assembly has a projecting abutment portion with one or more shape memory alloy compression plates or elements extending along the projecting abutment portion. Each of the plates has a length with one or more straightened portions and with at least one curved or arcuate portion. Energy may be applied to the elements such that the arcuate portion self-flattens to allow for the oral appliance to be placed thereupon while removal of the energy allows the elements to reconfigure into its curved configuration thereby locking the oral appliance to the abutment. Removal of the oral appliance may be effected by reapplication of energy to the elements.
Claims (28)
1.A retention system for an oral appliance, comprising:
an abutment configured to be secured within a mouth of a patient;
one or more shape memory elements secured along the abutment with each element having a portion which extends radially relative to the abutment when the elements are in a locking configuration, and wherein the one or more shape memory elements are secured against the oral appliance when in the locking configuration and are actuatable upon application of energy to transition from low-profile configuration where each portion remains retracted to the radially extended looking configuration.
an abutment configured to be secured within a mouth of a patient;
one or more shape memory elements secured along the abutment with each element having a portion which extends radially relative to the abutment when the elements are in a locking configuration, and wherein the one or more shape memory elements are secured against the oral appliance when in the locking configuration and are actuatable upon application of energy to transition from low-profile configuration where each portion remains retracted to the radially extended looking configuration.
2. The system of claim 1 wherein the oral appliance comprises it least one crown or bridge defining a receiving channel for positioning upon the abutment.
3. The system of claim 2 wherein the receiving channel within the crown or bridge defines a widened diameter corresponding to a diameter defined by the locking configuration.
4. The system of claim 1 further comprising an implant configured to bored into a bone of the mouth and defining a channel for securement to the abutment.
5. The system of claim 1 further comprising an upper retaining plate attached to the one or more shape memory elements.
6. The system of claim 5 wherein the one or more shape memory elements are attached to the abutment at a lower retaining portion.
7. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more shape memory elements comprise a nickel-titanium alloy.
8. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more shape memory elements comprise lead contacts.
9. The system of claim 8 wherein each of the one or more shape memory elements are electrically coupled to one another.
10. The system of claim 1 further comprising an energy source for applying the energy to the one or more shape memory elements.
11. The system of claim 10 wherein the energy source further comprises a controller.
12. The system of claim 10 wherein the energy source is electrically coupled to the one or more shape memory elements.
13. The system of claim 10 wherein the energy source comprises an oscillating circuit.
14. The system of claim 10 wherein the energy source is configured to form an oscillating magnetic field applied to the one or more elements.
15. The system of claim 10 wherein the energy source is positioned within or along a housing configured as a mouthpiece positioned in proximity to the oral appliance.
16. A method of retaining an oral appliance, comprising:
anchoring an abutment within a mouth of a patient;
positioning the oral appliance upon the abutment;
applying energy to one or more shape memory elements secured along the abutment with each element having a portion which extends radially relative to the abutment when the elements are in a locking configuration; and, reconfiguring the one or more shape memory elements from a low-profile configuration where each portion remains retracted to the locking configuration where each of the portions extend radially relative to the abutment into securement against an internal surface of the oral appliance.

positioning the oral appliance upon the abutment;
applying energy to one or more shape memory elements secured along the abutment with each element having a portion which extends radially relative to the abutment when the elements are in a locking configuration; and, reconfiguring the one or more shape memory elements from a low-profile configuration where each portion remains retracted to the locking configuration where each of the portions extend radially relative to the abutment into securement against an internal surface of the oral appliance.
17. The method of claim 16 wherein anchoring an abutment comprises securing the abutment to an implant bored into a bone of the patient.
18. The method of claim 16 wherein applying energy comprises applying an electrical current to the one or more shape memory elements.
19. The method of claim 16 wherein applying energy comprises applying an oscillating magnetic field to the one or more shape memory elements.
20. The method of claim 16 wherein positioning the oral appliance comprises positioning a crown or bridge defining a receiving channel upon the abutment.
21. The method of claim 16 wherein reconfiguring comprises applying the energy to the one or more shape memory elements.
22. The method of claim 16 wherein reconfiguring comprises compressing each of the portions against a widened diameter along the internal surface.
23. The method of claim 16 further comprising reapplying energy to the one or more shape memory elements such that each of the portions are straightened to release the oral appliance from the abutment.
24. A retention system for an oral appliance, comprising:
an abutment configured to be secured within a mouth of a patient;
one or more shape memory elements secured along the abutment with each element having a portion which extends radially relative to the abutment when the elements are in a locking configuration; and an oral appliance defining a receiving channel for positioning upon the abutment, wherein the one or more shape memory elements are secured against the receiving channel when in the locking configuration and are actuatable upon application of energy to transition from a low-profile configuration where each portion remains retracted to the radially extended locking configuration.
an abutment configured to be secured within a mouth of a patient;
one or more shape memory elements secured along the abutment with each element having a portion which extends radially relative to the abutment when the elements are in a locking configuration; and an oral appliance defining a receiving channel for positioning upon the abutment, wherein the one or more shape memory elements are secured against the receiving channel when in the locking configuration and are actuatable upon application of energy to transition from a low-profile configuration where each portion remains retracted to the radially extended locking configuration.
23. The system of claim 24 wherein the oral appliance comprises at least one crown or bridge.
26. The system of claim 24 further comprising a power source for applying the energy to the one or more shape memory elements.
27. The system of claim 24 further comprising a plurality of abutments which are connected to one another via across-bar.
28. The method of claim 16 wherein applying energy comprises contacting the one or more shape memory elements with thermal or electrical energy.
