Abstract

A microwave energy interactive heating sheet (400) includes at least two susceptor layers (404, 412) and a plurality of expandable insulating cells (420). At least some of the expandable insulating cells inflate when exposed to microwave energy.

Claims (20)

1. A microwave heating sheet for heating, browning, and/or crisping a food item in a microwave oven, comprising:
at least two susceptor layers; and a plurality of substantially closed cells adapted to inflate in response to microwave energy, wherein the microwave heating sheet includes printed matter pertaining to the food item.
2. The microwave heating sheet of claim 1, including a first surface intended to be contacted by the food item, wherein at least one of the susceptor layers is proximate to the first surface.
3. The microwave heating sheet of claim 2, wherein the microwave heating sheet includes a second surface opposite the first surface, and the printed matter is visible when viewing the second surface.
4. The microwave heating sheet of any of claims 1-3, wherein at least one of the susceptor layers is supported on a polymer film, and the polymer film at least partially defines a food-contacting surface.
5. The microwave heating sheet of any of claims 1-4, wherein each susceptor layer converts at least a portion of impinging microwave energy into thermal energy.
6. The microwave heating sheet of any of claims 1-5, wherein the microwave heating sheet transforms from a substantially planar shape to a multi-dimensional, lofted shape after sufficient exposure to microwave energy.
7. The microwave heating sheet of any of claims 1-6, wherein the printed matter includes information about the food item, instructions for preparing the food item, instructions for using the microwave heating sheet, or any combination thereof.
8. The microwave heating sheet of any of claims 1-7, wherein the microwave heating sheet is provided in a folded configuration with the food item.
9. The microwave heating sheet of any of claims 1-8, further comprising a moisture-containing layer joined to one of the susceptor layers, and a polymer film layer joined to the moisture-containing layer in a predetermined pattern, thereby defining the closed cells between the moisture-containing layer and the polymer film layer.
10. The microwave heating sheet of any of claims 1-9, wherein the microwave heating sheet comprises two adjoined plies of microwave energy interactive insulating material, and a first ply of the adjoined plies includes a first susceptor layer of the two susceptor layers, and the plurality of substantially closed cells.
11. The microwave heating sheet of claim 10, wherein the plurality of substantially closed cells is a first plurality of substantially closed cells, and a second ply of the adjoined plies includes a second susceptor layer of the two susceptor layers, and a second plurality of substantially closed cells.
12. The microwave heating sheet of claim 10 or 11, wherein the adjoined plies define a cavity for receiving the food item.
13. The microwave heating sheet of claim 11 or 12, wherein the first ply and the second ply are at least partially joined to one another along respective peripheral edges.
14. The microwave heating sheet of claim 12 or 13, wherein prior to heating, the food item is removed from the cavity and the plies are configured in a superposed, substantially contacting relationship.
15. The microwave heating sheet of any of claims 1-14, further comprising a barrier material that reduces the transmission of oxygen, water vapor, or any combination thereof through the microwave heating sheet.
16. A package for heating a food item in a microwave oven, comprising:
a first panel including a first susceptor layer, a moisture-containing layer joined to the first susceptor layer, and a polymer film layer joined to the moisture-containing layer in a predetermined pattern, thereby defining a plurality of expandable cells between the moisture-containing layer and the polymer film layer, wherein the expandable cells are adapted to inflate upon sufficient exposure to microwave energy; and a second panel including a second susceptor layer, wherein the first panel and the second panel define a cavity for receiving the food item, and prior to heating the food item, the food item is intended to be removed from the cavity, and the first panel and the second panel are adapted to be configured in a substantially superposed, substantially contacting relationship to collectively define a heating sheet on which the food item is seated.
17. The package of claim 16, wherein the moisture-containing layer is a first moisture-containing layer, the polymer film layer is a first polymer film layer, the plurality of expandable cells is a first plurality of expandable cells, and the second panel further includes a second moisture-containing layer joined to the second susceptor layer, and a second polymer film layer joined to the second moisture-containing layer in a predetermined pattern, thereby defining a second plurality of expandable cells between the second moisture-containing layer and the second polymer film layer.
18. The package of claim 16 or 17, wherein the first panel and the second panel are at least partially joined to one another along respective peripheral edges.
19. The package of any of claims 16-18, further comprising a barrier layer that reduces the transmission of oxygen, water vapor, or any combination thereof through the microwave heating sheet.
20. The package of any of claims 16-19, wherein at least one of the first panel and the second panel includes information about the food item, instructions for preparing the food item, instructions for using the microwave heating sheet, or any combination thereof.
