Abstract
A method and apparatus for coordinating the time at which a mobile station (5) performs searches for alternative systems to which a hard handoff will occur. In one system which includes the present invention, the mobile station (5) receives a command which instructs the mobile station (5) as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indications of the presence of an alternative system. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both an origination base station (10) and a mobile station (5).
The mobile station (5) tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station (5) coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station (5) when the mobile station (5) is tuned to the origination frequency.

Claims (6)
1. A base station apparatus for minimizing loss of data in a communication link between a mobile station and a base station while searching for a suitable system with which a mobile assisted hard handoff will later be executed comprising:
a forward link power control mechanism for determining a forward link power control index;
a boost mode multiplier for increasing a relative output power level at which data is transferred during a portion of a current data frame to produce a boost mode data frame having a power level determined by the forward link power control index;
a data rate multiplier for increasing a data rate during a portion of a current data frame to produce a boost mode data frame having an increased data rate determined by a data rate multiplier;
a block interleaver for error correction coding of boost mode data frames;
a convolutional encoder for error correction coding of boost mode data frames;
a symbol repeater for creating symbol repetition in less than full rate boost mode data frames; and a multiplexer for controlling puncture of power control commands into boost mode data frames on a forward link channel.

a data rate multiplier for increasing a data rate during a portion of a current data frame to produce a boost mode data frame having an increased data rate determined by a data rate multiplier;
a block interleaver for error correction coding of boost mode data frames;
a convolutional encoder for error correction coding of boost mode data frames;
a symbol repeater for creating symbol repetition in less than full rate boost mode data frames; and a multiplexer for controlling puncture of power control commands into boost mode data frames on a forward link channel.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the multiplexer for controlling puncture of power control commands on a forward link channel is configured to delay the puncturing of power control commands.
3. A method of boosting, at a base station, an output power level of a portion of a pair of data frames to ensure that an error correction code will be capable of determining information that is transmitted over a first frequency during the time a mobile station receiver is tuned to a second frequency comprising:
sending, from a base station to a mobile station, a message identifying an elected frame pair comprising a first frame and second frame;
increasing a forward link power control index;
transmitting a portion of the first frame of the identified elected frame pair at a power level determined by the increased forward link power control index;
interrupting forward link transmission during a second portion of the first frame of the elected frame pair and a first portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair;
transmitting a second portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair at a power level determined by the increased forward link power control index; and resetting the forward link power control index.
sending, from a base station to a mobile station, a message identifying an elected frame pair comprising a first frame and second frame;
increasing a forward link power control index;
transmitting a portion of the first frame of the identified elected frame pair at a power level determined by the increased forward link power control index;
interrupting forward link transmission during a second portion of the first frame of the elected frame pair and a first portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair;
transmitting a second portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair at a power level determined by the increased forward link power control index; and resetting the forward link power control index.
4. The method of claim 3 wherein the increasing the forward link power control index comprises disabling a power control subchannel.
5. The method of claim 3 or claim 4 wherein the resetting the forward link power control index comprises enabling a power control subchannel.
6. A method of boosting, at a base station, a data rate of a portion of a pair of data frames to ensure that an error correction code will be capable of determining information that is transmitted over a first frequency during the time a mobile station receiver is tuned to a second frequency comprising:
sending, from a base station to a mobile station, a message identifying an elected frame pair comprising a first frame and a second frame;
transmitting a portion of the first frame of the identified elected frame pair at an increased data rate determined by a data rate multiplier;
interrupting forward link transmission during a second portion of the first frame of the elected frame pair and a first portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair; and transmitting a second portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair at the increased data rate determined by the data rate multiplier.
sending, from a base station to a mobile station, a message identifying an elected frame pair comprising a first frame and a second frame;
transmitting a portion of the first frame of the identified elected frame pair at an increased data rate determined by a data rate multiplier;
interrupting forward link transmission during a second portion of the first frame of the elected frame pair and a first portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair; and transmitting a second portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair at the increased data rate determined by the data rate multiplier.
