Abstract

A cannula assembly (10) for performing a surgical includes a cannula defining a longitudinal axis (a) and having a longitudinal passageway (29) extending therethrough, a seal for substantially sealing the longitudinal passageway within the cannula in the absence of an object being received through the passageway and an elongated membrane (30) disposed within the longitudinal passageway of the cannula. The elongated membrane is secured to the cannula at respective ends of the elongated membrane to define an annular space (38) between the elongated membrane and the cannula. The cannula has a throughhole (42) in communication with the annular space whereby, when the cannula is positioned within an insufflated body cavity, insufflation gases pass through the throughhole to expand the annular space to thereby cause the elongated membrane to form a seal about an object inserted therethrough.

Claims (27)

1. A cannula assembly for performing a surgical procedure, which comprises:
a cannula defining a longitudinal axis and having a longitudinal passageway extending therethrough;
a seal for substantially sealing the longitudinal passageway within the cannula in the absence of an object being received through the passageway; and an elongated membrane disposed within the longitudinal passageway of the cannula, the elongated membrane secured to the cannula at respective ends of the elongated membrane to define an annular space between the elongated membrane and the cannula, the cannula having a throughhole in communication with the annular space whereby, when the cannula is positioned within an insufflated body cavity, insufflation gases pass through the throughhole to expand the annular space to thereby cause the elongated membrane to form a seal about an object inserted therethrough.
2. The cannula assembly according to claim 1 wherein the elongated membrane includes a material selected from the group consisting of KEVLAR and nylon.
3. The cannula assembly according to claim 2 wherein the elongated membrane comprises an elastomeric material.
4. The cannula assembly according to claim 1 wherein the elongated membrane comprises a knitted construction that expands upon the introduction of an instrument inserted therethrough.
5. The cannula assembly according to claim 1 wherein the elongated membrane includes at least one ridge on an inner surface portion thereof.
6. The cannula assembly according to claim 5 wherein the at least one ridge is arranged on the elongated membrane so as to occupy a void between the inner surface portion of the elongated membrane and the object to facilitate sealing relation with the object.
7. The cannula assembly according to claim 6 wherein the elongated membrane comprises a plurality of ridges radially spaced about the inner surface portion of the elongated membrane.
8. The cannula assembly according to claim 1 wherein the elongated membrane is adapted to substantially close the passageway in response to introduction of gases within the annular space and in the absence of an object inserted therethrough.
9. The cannula assembly according to claim 1 wherein the throughhole is disposed at a distal end of the cannula in an outer wall portion thereof.
10. The cannula assembly according to claim 9 including a second passage adjacent a proximal end of the cannula and in communication with the annular space to provide fluid to the annular space.
11. The cannula assembly according to claim 10 wherein the second passage for providing fluid is adapted for fluid connection to an external source of insufflation gases.
12. The cannula assembly according to claim 11 wherein the cannula includes a housing and a cannula body extending from the housing, wherein the second passage for providing fluid includes a channel within the housing and in communication with the annular space to permit passage of insufflation gases therethrough.
13. The cannula assembly according to claim 12 wherein one end of the elongate membrane is secured within the housing and the other end of the elongated membrane is secured within the cannula body.
14. The cannula assembly according to claim 1 wherein the cannula includes a cannula body wherein each end of the elongated membrane is secured within the cannula body.
15. A method for accessing a body cavity, comprising the steps of:
providing a cannula defining a longitudinal axis and having a longitudinal passageway extending therethrough, an elongated membrane disposed within the longitudinal passageway of the cannula, the elongated membrane secured to the cannula at respective ends of the elongated membrane to define an annular space between the elongated membrane and the cannula, and a seal for sealing the passageway in the absence of an object received through the passageway;
introducing the cannula within body tissue to access an underlying body cavity;
expanding the body cavity with insufflation gases;
permitting the insufflation gases to communicate with the annular space to expand the annular space; and advancing an object within the cannula and through the seal whereby the elongated membrane engages the object to form a substantial sealing relation therewith.
16. The method according to claim 15 wherein the cannula includes a throughhole in a wall portion thereof in communication with the annular space whereby, during the step of permitting, insufflation gases pass through the throughhole to expand the annular space.
17. The method according to claim 16 wherein the cannula includes a passage for providing insufflation gases to the annular space and wherein the step of permitting includes connecting the passage to an external source of fluid.
18. The method according to claim 17 wherein the passage includes a channel within the cannula and in communication with the annular space wherein during the step of permitting, fluid passes from the external source through the channel and into the annular space
19. A cannula assembly for performing a surgical procedure, which comprises a cannula defining a longitudinal axis and having a longitudinal passageway extending therethrough and an elongated membrane disposed within the longitudinal passageway so as to define an annular space between the membrane and the cannula, the cannula having a first passage for receiving insufflation fluids from an external source of insufflation fluid and being in communication with the annular space and a throughhole defining a second passage in communication with the annular space.
20. The cannula assembly according to claim 19 wherein the cannula includes a cannula body, the cannula body defining an opening in an outer wall portion thereof, the opening defining the throughhole.
21. The cannula assembly according to claim 19 wherein the opening within the outer wall portion of the cannula body is adjacent a distal end of the cannula body, whereby upon positioning the cannula body within an insufflated body cavity, the opening is disposed within the cavity and permits passage of insufflation fluids therethrough into the annular space.
22. The cannula assembly according to claim 21 wherein the cannula includes a cannula housing connected to the cannula body, the cannula housing including a channel extending therethrough and adapted for connection to an external source of insufflation fluid, the channel defining the first passage.
23. A cannula assembly for performing a surgical procedure, which comprises a cannula defining a longitudinal axis and having a longitudinal passageway extending therethrough and an elongated seal disposed within the longitudinal passageway, the seal being inflatable to engage the object to form a substantial seal about the object while permitting passage of the object, the sealing member comprising a knitted construction.
