Abstract
ABSTRACT
A desk configuration in which the visual display unit and keyboard of a computer terminal are stored beneath the work surface thereof so as to provide maximum work space on the desk top, while providing optimum viewing of the visual display by utilizing otherwise unused space beneath the desk.
The unit is slidable from the storage position to an operating position in which the keyboard is extended out from beneath the desk and the visual display unit is visible through a transparent window in the work surface. Preferably the entire slidable unit is in the form of a moulded plastics shell having adjustable friction pads to hold and adjust the visual display unit.

Description
689s This invention relates to a desk configuration having a computer terminal mount operatively associated therewith.
Office desks incorporating stationary organizers, calculating machines, typewriters and the like are well known in the art. Numerous slidable units to carry type-writers, filing cabinets and the like in office desks have also been suggested, generally designed so that the type-writer or other equipment can be slid from an operable extended position external of the desk to an inoperable or retracted storage position within the framework of the desk.
Generally the storage position is designed so as to provide a maximum of knee space under the working surface of the desk.
Modern offices are making increasing use of computers and relatively small compact computer terminals have become common articles of office impedimenta and accessability thereto and storage thereof has become a matter of consider-able concern. A computer terminal differs from such equipment as a typewriter because it not only has a keyboard, in common with the typewriter, for access to the computer, but also has a visual display unit from which to read computer results.
Generally, but not essentially, the keyboard unit is detached from the visual display unit and generally smaller than the display unit. It is only used in conjunction with the display unit. Thus, when the keyboard is in its storage position the visual display is also in its storage position.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a desk configuration having a computer terminal operatively associated therewith.
~k ~'106895 Thus, by one aspect of the present invention there is provided a desk configuration comprising:
(a) a planar work surface portion having spaced longitudinal front and rear edges;
(b) means supporting said work surface portion; and (c) frame means, supported beneath said work surface for slidable movement between a storage position adjacent said front edge and an operative position adjacent said rear edge, for adjustably supporting a computer terminal visual display unit and keyboard therefor, such that said display unit and keyboard are located entirely beneath said work surface when said frame is in said storage position and said keyboard extends rearwardly from said work surface when said frame is in said operative position; and wherein at least a portion of said work surface is transparent so as to provide visual access to said visual display unit when said frame means is in said operative position.
The invention will be described in more detail here-inafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a desk configuration according to one embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side view, partly in section, taken along II-II of Figure 3, of the embodiment shown in Figure l; and Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the embodi-ment shown in Figure 1.
As seen in Figure 1, a conventional office-type desk 10 is provided with a planar work top 11 supported by upstanding end portions 12 and 13 respectively and a modesty .' :'' ' ' .:
--- ~106895 board 14. At least a portion of the planar work top 11 is transparent in order to be able to view a visual display unit 15, such as a cathode ray tube of any known and conven-tional design, mounted therebelow as described in more detail h~!r~l~ldft~l.
Preferably a transparent panel 16 is provided in work top 11, although it will be appreciated that the entire work top 11 may be fabricated in a transparent material if desired.
A pair of parallel slide members 17, 18 are mounted on opposite sides of a terminal mount frame means 20 and adapted to receive slide means 19, such as rollers, mounted on the underside of work top 11, in such a manner that frame 20 can slide between an operative extended position as shown in solid lines in Figure 2 and a storage position, shown in phantom in Figure 2. Slide members 17,18 and slide means 19 may be of any conventional design and may comprise sliding abutting surfaces or a sliding surface and cooperating roller or wheel means, known per se. It will be appreciated that the location of slide members 17, 18 and slide means 19 is a matter of choice and may be reversed if desired, i.e. the slide members 17, 18 may be mounted on the underside of work top 11 and slide means 19 on opposite sides of terminal mount frame means 20.
The frame 20 may comprise a plurality of wooden or metallic lattic frame members secured to each other in conventional manner or, preferably, a prefabricated substantially rectangular shell (as seen in plan view and front elevation) having suit-ably smoothly rounded corners 21 and a rectangular rearwardly facing extension 22, as seen in Figure 2. The prefabricated shell may conveniently be moulded in a thermoplastic or ;
.
thermosetting plastics material and may be reinforced with a fibrous material such as glass fibre. Adjustable pads 23 and 24 are mounted on opposite sides of the shell or frame 20 to clampingly hold and support the visual display unit 15 at any desired height and angle relative to the work top 11. In a preferred embodiment, as shown in Figure 2, bracket 25 is secured to the rear of the extension 22 for vertical adjustment relative thereto, to carry a detachable keyboard 26 for the computer terminal. It will, of course, be appreciated that, particularly in instances where height adjustment is not required or necessary, bracket 25 may be integrally formed with the shell moulding or be an integral part of the frame 20.
~ hen it is required to use the computer terminal it is a simple matter for the operator to pull the keyboard 26 out to the extended position shown in Figures 1 and 2, thus moving the display unit screen 27 to a position where it can be optimally viewed through transparent panel 16 in the work top 11 while affording an uncluttered work surface and utilizing otherwise unused space beneath the desk. Upon completion of the computation or the like, the keyboard and the frame can be pushed into the rest or storage position thereby affording a conventional desk.
