In 2005, Google piloted the competition in London to help celebrate
the opening of its Googleplex office.
The winner of the 2005 competition was an eleven year-old girl from Hill House
primary school called Lisa Wainaina. She designed a doodle titled 'Day of the
child'. Lisa's creative theme and clever incorporation of childhood images into
the Google logo contributed to her being named the winner of the London competition.
Lisa's doodle was hosted on the Google homepage for 24 hours for millions of
people to see, including her very proud parents and schoolmates.
Over 50 primary and secondary schools from the London area were invited to take part in the competition. We were inundated with entries and so impressed with the raw talent and creativity in the design and theme of so many doodles that we decided to take the competition nationwide in 2006.
