This UCS isn't full of sun bathing coeds or surfers. It's packed with scientists. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an environmental organization that researches air quality, alternative energy sources, food safety and other public health issues, and the impact of global warming and nuclear war. The not-for-profit alliance includes more than 250,000 scientists and other individuals. The UCS publishes reports as well as Catalyst magazine and the Earthwise newsletter. About half of the organization's funding comes from grants and foundations. Faculty and students of MIT founded UCS in 1969 to redirect scientific research to environmental and social problems.
