US weekly jobless claims fell to a near six-month low last week, according to data from the Labor Department. Initial jobless claims dropped by 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 232,000 in the week to 12 August from 244,000 the previous week.
UK retail sales increased in July as stronger spending on food offset a fall in the purchase of other goods, according to official figures.
