This city, which literally covers a "mesa" or plateau, stands roughly 100 feet higher than Phoenix and spreads across 130 square miles. With a population of more than 468,000, the City of Mesa is the third-largest city in Arizona, behind Phoenix and Tucson. Its city government consists of the mayor, six city council members (elected to four-year terms), and a city manager. Mesa is also home to the Chicago Cubs baseball team during spring training. The city was founded in 1878 by Mormon (Latter-day Saint or LDS) pioneers, who gave it its name; Mesa still has a large Mormon population. It was incorporated in 1883.
