Kimbell Art Foundation, established in 1935 by Kay Kimbell, operates the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. The first-rate public art museum (opened in 1972 and built by American architect Louis Kahn) got started with a gift from Kimbell of of several hundred works of art. With a permanent collection comprised of fewer than 350 works of art, the collection is distinguished by its artistic quality and importance. Today, the museum houses pieces dating from antiquity into the 20th century. When Kimbell died in 1964, he left his fortune to the Kimbell Art Foundation to establish and support the Kimbell Art Museum.
