Glencore Xstrata is set to appoint former BP boss Tony Hayward as interim chairman, after John Bond failed to be reelected to the top job at the company's inaugural shareholder meeting, a source with knowledge of the matter said.

John Bond, a City veteran and former chairman of Xstrata, earlier surprised investors by announcing he had been voted out of the top job at the miner and trader at its first annual shareholders' meeting, which he then asked Hayward to lead.

The shares of Glencore Xstrata (LSE: GLEN) rallied 1% to 347p this morning after the newly merged commodities giant revealed an 18% increase in first-quarter copper production to 321,000 tonnes.
