“When developing the most robust and comprehensive fleet tracking application available, we needed to
integrate web-based mapping that was as advanced as our own solution. For us, Google Maps for Enterprise
was the only mapping technology that we felt adequately complimented our own.”

Business
Trak-iT™ is a leading provider of wireless fleet tracking, communication, and management
solutions. Trak-iT develops, implements and distributes electronic monitoring and tracking
systems that connect an office network with its “on-the-road” fleet and its “in-the-field”
professionals. Trak-iT enables companies to monitor their most valuable assets, be they
trucks, employees, or any physical assets that can be managed with a GPS system.
Whether using GPS or LBS technology for fleet monitoring, with all its benefits, or using
the advanced technology of today's digital networks to exchange vital information with staff
in the field, Trak-iT provides an easy to customize and deploy solution.
Challenge
Trak-iT’s original product, Fleet Freedom, offered its customers the ability to track and
manage their mobile assets from a desktop application using a local mapping data source.
Although a comprehensive solution, Trak-iT wanted to expand their offering by creating a
web-based version of their application, thereby enabling their customers to choose the most
appropriate deployment path for their own purposes. The challenge in offering a web-based
version was in creating an application that offered as rich of a user experience through the
browser, as that which customers were already enjoying through the full Windows based
application. In order to provide the most robust user interface, Trak-iT leveraged the very
latest in web development technologies wherever possible. To display location information
to the customer, Trak-iT required the integration of a third party web-based mapping provider.
Because the existing web-based mapping components were very slow and cumbersome to use, Trak-iT’s
application was hindered by lengthy page reloads and the lack of simple drag-and-drop capabilities.
Solution
To power its new Fleet Freedom Internet Edition, Trak-iT partnered
with Google and licensed the company’s best-in-class solution--Google Maps for Enterprise.
With Google Maps for Enterprise, businesses can utilize the Google Maps API to integrate data
and seamlessly build maps into applications of all types to create a high performance mapping
experience. The powerful combination of maps, imagery and geographically linked data enables
Trak-iT to deliver web-based solutions that:
- Visually track and manage assets, enabling dispatchers to see every vehicle on a Google map at any point in time.
- Create geo-fences and automatic alarms, alerting the company when a driver veers more than a specified distance from its intended location.
- Set notifications to alert operating executives if a scheduled truck does not reach its destination on time.
- Provide employees with aesthetically pleasing and contextual information by allowing them to easily switch between illustrated, satellite, and hybrid mapping images.
- Allows dispatchers to quickly and easily identify any vehicle or asset with custom icons and easy to read information windows.
- Quickly pan and zoom without reloading an entire map image, enabling field employees to access information quickly and easily.
- Always provide employees with access to the latest mapping information available.
The enterprise quality support that Trak-iT receives with Google Maps
for Enterprise allows Trak-iT to leverage the full power of Google’s mapping expertise.
“The ongoing support that we receive enables us to fully utilize our mission critical
maps to provide our customers with business critical knowledge and capabilities,” said
Felix Shterenfeld, Development Manager for Trak-iT’s Fleet Freedom Internet Edition.
Results
Today, Trak-iT's solution leveraging Google Maps for
Enterprise offers more advanced mapping features than ever before, and is even
easier to use. “With Google Maps for Enterprise we get an internet solution with
the functionality of a desktop application,” proclaimed Shterenfeld. “The
functionality and ease of use provided by Google Maps for Enterprise empowers us
to offer our customers improved security, productivity, decision-making, customer
service, and a more profitable bottom line.”
These benefits are shared by Trak-iT's customers, who can leverage
the functionality offered by Google Maps for Enterprise to reach new levels of employee
and client satisfaction. For example, one of Trak-iT's customers allows drivers to bring
their trucks home for the evening. To prevent personal use, they create geo-fences around
the drivers' homes, and if the truck moves more than one kilometer away during the night,
the dispatcher is notified. In another example, a security services company that uses
Trak-iT is able to monitor all of its trucks and, if an emergency notification is triggered,
immediately assess the situation visually on a map and provide emergency services with a
truck's location.
Trak-iT sees the potential for new areas of opportunity for its products,
since virtually any company concerned with productivity, security, or the activity of any
mobile resource can benefit from the power of real-time, on-demand location information.
For example, Segway tour operators can monitor the status and location of rental units.
Not only does this provide an element of security for their customers and equipment,
it also allows them to analyze rental equipment usage patterns and use the information
to help plan future tours. “With the help of Google Maps for Enterprise, Trak-iT now
has the most comprehensive tracking and monitoring platform available. We can help any
company with remote and mobile resources achieve competitive advantage through better
asset management. The opportunities to impact new industries are endless.”
